HELP!! too much peat moss
Just built and planted new sq ft garden, but did not allow for expansion of compacted peat moss. Now I guess I have 2 times amount recommended in mix recipe...what can I do? When I planted, mix seemed too "sloppy", so I investigated this morning and discovered my mistake..Thanks for help!

Re: HELP!! too much peat moss
Since you just planted, probably the best thing to do (which you may have seen in one or both of the other links), since they haven't had a chance to send roots into your garden yet, is to gently take the plants back up, water and protect them, and then fix your mix. In the process, you will end up with mix enough for two boxes, which is not a bad thing at all.
It can be a bit of a financial difficulty, though, because of the cost of composts and vermiculite. (You wouldn't have to get materials for a second box immediately, though... your excess mix can be stored in your empty compost and vermiculite bags until you can build another box.)
If you cannot buy the components to fix your mix, believe me, you are not alone. You could buy some excellent compost -- some manure compost, some cotton burr compost, some rabbit manure (fresh can go straight in), some worm castings -- these are all excellent. Mix a handful or two gently into each planted square around your plants. You will probably also need to fertilize regularly with Miracle-Gro or something.
Be sure that your mix is wet all the way through. Just stick your hand in to the bottom of a few of your squares. If the bottom isn't as damp as the top, you need to water lightly to moderately, 2-3 times a day until your mix is completely wet. Keep an eye on the water situation in your garden, since the excess peat moss tends to form a dry crust on the top, and you don't have as much water-holding capability with half the vermiculite.
If you are able to remove your plants and remix, be sure to wet and stir, wet and stir your mix until it is thoroughly damp before you replant.
Keep us posted, and good luck!

Tom, We are really glad you joined us.
Sorry you had a mix up when preparing your Mel's Mix. I agree with MissM, since you just prepared it, fix it now, before you plant, if you have already planted, take out your transplants and protect them while you fix the mix, then replant them as soon as possible.
Did you make just ONE 4 X 4? Remove half of the MM then add the necessary compost and vermiculite to your box and mix it all in. Make sure you water it well. Bring your mix back to 1/3 vermiculite, 1/3 compost and 1/3 peat moss. You will be so much happier because you won't see your plants struggle and you won't have to worry about what nutients you need to add. If you can, correct the mix that you remove too and store it in the empty vermiculite bag until you make your next SFG bed.
Please keep us updated on your progress and once you get all planted, share pictures too!
Again, Welcome.
