So I didn't check my garden for 2 days and what happens? It got hot and one of my broccoli heads had a yellow flower. I'm wondering, minus the flower - can I eat the rest of this?

Never tried one looking like that. However, the shoot in the lower left of your picture is perfect.

This year, on a lark, I planted 4 broccoli plants. Two of which flowered right away. I clipped the flowers off and they have started to put out small (I mean really small) heads off the main stem. The third plant had a nice head forming and my two year old daughter tromped up to it and yanked the center stem out of the plant. Somehow the outer leaves weren't damaged so I left it, grateful that she is cute and likes fresh veggies. The fourth plant has a beautiful, large head forming and I want to weep because it will come to maturity next week while we are on vacation. As will the majority of our strawberries.

Do you have someone to water for you while you're on holiday?

Don't let the broccoli go to waste.

Cut that puppy for dinner the night before you go on vacation. Even if they are small they are still mature enough to eat.
Make sure you leave the center stem and then baby spears will grow from the side and some might even be ready when you get home.
