Re: Here it is boffer.....
The back story: Last year, Josh grew a strain of carrots that have produced the largest carrots ever. Before harvesting, he had a little contest to guess how big his biggest carrot would be. Boffer won. The prize was a seed packet of that same carrot strain. When he received the seed packet, boffer challenged Josh to a grow-off to see who could grow the biggest carrot this year...as you can see, it's off to a slow start! There has been a little competitive trash talking in the last couple months! |

You mean like: 'Mine's bigger than yours' LOL
So I went to Josh's flickr site, and it says that his picture was taken yesterday. So I'm pretty sure that he's not scamming me with a picture taken a month ago! Heck, the seeds that he sent me have been so slow to grow that I was beginning to wonder if he microwaved them before he sent them to me!
I made two of these things. One filled with MM, and the other a special mix fueled with grow juice. They were duds. But I know what I would do differently next time.
This is the top of a dedicated deep box, special made, that is probably similar to yours. It's been so cool here, that over two months, the tallest green is barely 5 inches on his tippy toes.
But I hedged my bet, and on the same day, I planted the seeds in one square in my carrot box. Mine's bigger than yours! Same MM. I guess the SFG box held more heat. The bad part is that there's only 8-9 inches of MM. Plenty for my other carrots, but not for what we're doing. Hopefully they'll reach bottom, make a 90° turn and keep going!
I have one other growing contraption that no one else, not even my wife, has seen. The carrots are growing beyond my expectations. I'm keeping those carrots up my sleeve for now.

Re: Here it is boffer.....
No can do, ol' buddy. I knew going in, that since Josh is a Master Gardener and Certified SFG teacher, I was going to have to resort to treachery and trickery in order to have a chance to win. And he beat me at that. He got on Google satellite maps to see if he could see in my backyard and tell what I was up to. (I wish I had thought of that!) Little did he know, my mailing address is different than my residence!
I've been thinking recently I didn't have a chance to win cause it's been so cool. Maybe I'm back in it? But, I think he's holding something back, too!

On my next trip to Bremerton or Sequim, I may have to take a little side trip to Yelm and see what is going on.

Funny now? Wait until the Hippie finds this one.
I found the "up my sleeve" comment kind of telling. He never mentioned to which "sleeve" he is referring. I'm telling you it's an ego thing between and old man, young buck, and a couple of genetically ENHANCED carrots....

Re: Here it is boffer.....
Ok Boffer, I knew you would be a tough one to beat!
But I have some things up my sleeve too!
I planted some of the giant carrots in the square I grew last years giant carrots in, and it has a high rise that makes it about 12 inches high, and they are growing better than the ones in the special contraption.
I also have some planted in another place and I'm not showing it.
I think we think alike!
Do you think my special contraption is almost as tall as I am...or do you think I'm just on my knees fooling ya?

Are you sure you two are not related?
Tried to find a bigger image of boffer looking through his hoop house, but you can get the similarities from his avatar. This crazy carrot "contest" between these two is one of the highlights of this SFG forum!

I forgot to mention that for the contraption I didn't show, it's so tall that I have to get on a step ladder to water the carrots.Josh wrote:I also have some planted in another place and I'm not showing it.

My guess is that our boxes are close to the same height. But mine's big enough to get inside of!

Boffer, you and Josh need to place warnings such as "Dangerous Contents Ahead" before you spring something like this on us.
