Ripping out my garden

Howdy, folks!

I know I haven't been around much. Couple of reasons for that. First, it's just too dang hot and it's all I can do to get out there each morning and water the garden and I have no desire to actually tend it.

Second, we started house-hunting. We're renting here and decided it was time to buy. Yesterday we had our offer accepted, so we're expecting to move at the end of July. I'm taking my boxes/MM with me, since it's just a move of a few short blocks.

So last night I ventured out as the sun was going down and faced my neglected garden. I asked myself where to start and thought "one square at a time." That helped me get going. Most of my plants were dying anyway. Summer is definitely the "off season" here. Found out SVBs had attacked yet again. Just pulled the squash this time.

Eggplant and okra are unaffected by the heat and I've got some oregano doing well. I'll leave those in until the last minute and see what I can get. Jimmy Nardello peppers are doing great, too, and that plant is in a 2.5 gallon pot, so I can take it with me.

The new house has an even smaller backyard, so my plan right now is to double stack my boxes and have half as many that are twice as deep and see if that helps any with the heat. Figure I might as well give it a go since I already have the MM.

I'll start gardening again around September!

Congratulations on your new home. After you have restarted your garden keep us informed on how well the extra deep boxes work out for you. Are there any seeds you need, you know for a home warming gift? Growing in your own yard is 10 times better than someone else's yard!

Congrats on the new home. Summer gardening in our region is a trail by fire to be sure. Maybe you can transplant your pepper. You will be ready for fall gardening . I am a renter, always have been That was one of the many things that attracted me to SFG in fact. I have found afternoon shade and mulching help alot to keep my garden cooler as well as extra water. I am not sure about extra depth.

I would also try Boffer's idea about guttering lettuce and smaller veggies. Stacking the gutters will really save some space and allow your bigger plants to have squares unto themselves.
