So, could I put a square of marigolds in with the onions and radishes in my new Deer-Be-Gone garden or would Bambi's cousins just laugh at me? I didn't even think about the deer when I was talking about edging the pool with marigolds.
I have no experience with deer eating marigolds, but I do know that cows love them!!!
We lived across a dirt road from a cow pasture. One Sunday morning they did not lock the gate properly after feeding the cattle. I had a meeting before church and about the time my meeting ended, I was getting a call from my wife. Several of the cows took advantage of the mislocked gate and decided to go for a stroll...into our front yard. Much to their pleasure, the day before, my wife planted a buffet for them of fresh marigolds. the odd thing was they only ate the flowers off the stems. Of course they didn't stop there. Apparently cows also like bird seed, but not the bird feeder which one of them crushed with their head while sticking their tongue into it to get the seed. Next they ventured over to my first ever garden which was a row garden with an 18" fence that they quickly flattened along with all my plants...end result - 0 harvest, 0 marigolds and 1 upset wife.

BOGO at Burpee right now, so that means it's only half as bad. (Plus shipping of course. )

MIGOSH! Not only are their seeds over $5 a packet, but shipping is almost $3 EACH! That's $8 a packet of seeds. Even with $10 off or the BOGO deal, it's still ridiculous.
