How do I get my squash and zucchini to grow up my trellis?

Here is a good video posted in the past by lavender debs. After you look his entire garden over he does a nice job on poling zucchini.

AWESOME find.....thanks Westie. I'll be sure to copy this trick for both my squash and zukes. Looks like a real space saver. They all have their first flowers and are almost a foot tall. Got this tip just in time !!!

Thanks for asking this question, OP. I've got a zucchini plant growing and was wondering how I was going to trellis it. Now I'm just annoyed that I've got it on the trellis row when I could have put it somewhere else! Smile

I didn't plant a stake before I planted my Zucchini so I guess I will just tie it to the trellis to start it. After that I can weave it in and out of the mesh.
Thanks for posting the video, I had been looking for it on YouTube.

All the links seem to indicate I can do the zucchini trellised in just one square, but the SFG book says two. Which should I go with? I can certainly find something to put in that empty square I have right now if the zucchini will grow in just one square. . .

I'm currently growing mine in one square. I have been pruning leaves below the fruit, and tying the plant to the trellis post for support. I have cucumbers growing happily in the square right next to it, and corn thriving in the one in front of it. This is my first garden, so I don't know what late summer will bring, but so far, so good!

If I'm not mistaken, the two-square requirement is for leaf space, not roots. Not that two squares is enough for the leaves...

If you trellis or stake the squash, and keep it trimmed, you are supposed to be able to grow one per square.

I did not drive stakes until my plants were already huge, and I needed to do something drastic. I got the 6-foot twirly ones. Thicker stakes would probably be better, but I had plenty of sand at the bottom of my box to drive them into. Driving the stakes seemed to have no effect on the plants.

My zucchini is going to undergo this treatment! I love it. I have one planted next to a trellis I built, but one is just at the edge of a bed. I'll pound a stake into the ground outside my sfg and tie the plant to it as it gets bigger. That way the roots won't get damaged, and the stake won't go through my ground cloth under my mm.

Last year I started this late in the season and it was fairly easy to cut the leaves back and tie the vine or main stem to a pole. My young zuc and squash plants are now starting to flower and I am wanting to get them tied to my trellis. The problem is that the "vine" or main stem is not all that long right now. Is is okay to cut off all the leaves that are behind the flowers or do I need to wait until I get some fruit before I start cutting the leaves back?

Did you watch the video? That fella said to wait until after harvesting the fruit to prune the leaves off the vine BELOW where you took the fruit/vegetable. Because the plants are young and small whatever trellising or staking you do now may be a temporary support, until the plant gets a bit larger, which could be in as little as a week.

I can't watch videos here at the office. At home with a wife, 4 kids and a garden I don't find much time to watch videos. So I will wait until after the fruit comes off.
