tomatos for fall

As most of you know, I am leaving town on Thurs and not returning until mid Sep. I have somebody using, watching and watering for the summer but they only need 2 beds. They are going to seed some things for me in Aug. Kale, lettuce (aug and sep seeding), mustard, spinach. But I was wondering if there is anything I can direct seed now for Sep or later harvest. Especially, I would like to have a tomato or 2 waiting when I get back. What about winter squash? Late collards? (the summer collards may still be usable as the sitters don't like collards) I can ask them to put in some bush beans next month. Looking for suggestions. I have about 40 squares for my use. Eight squares are on low trellis and I can set up a 4 1/2 ft trellis easy enough for 2 more squares for maybe determinate tomatos. Any suggestions? FYI Zone 8A with hoops that I can put plastic on. Harvested the last of my in the flower bed tomatos and peppers in mid Nov last year

Have you considered patio tomato plants, Kay? I'm thinking of planting them in (large) pots in late summer and bringing them indoors in the early autumn after they get a good stem growing. You know, tomatoes take a few months to get going. I couldn't harvest a tomato that I grew from early spring later than some time in early Oct and that's with luck and not minding the bitter taste/off icky taste. Here, they are usually done in Sept. if I'm lucky and all goes right.

Talked to my neighbor who has been row gardening here since 1992. He said he just planted seeds today for a few fall tomatos. Will probably start setting fruit early Sep. That was enough for me. Went out and bought some determinate tomato seeds and planted in pots that I can take into the mini greenhouse next fall. Will also put into 2 squares tomorrow. Superboy hybrid 785, 70 to 75 days to harvest. Not what I would normally buy, but they were the only determinates left on the rack except romas. And I'm going to take a chance and plant 2 winter squash as well. It's only seeds.

Took a chance and planted tomato seed and butternut squash this morning. I have collected a baggie of seeds and made a plot plan with planting dates for the garden sitters. With a little luck I'll have some early fall veggies to come back to.

Guess I just can't stay out of the garden even when I'm leaving in 4 days.
