Composting when your yard is mostly weeds? Empty Composting when your yard is mostly weeds?

I'd like to try my hand at doing my own compost but our yard is mostly henbit and wild violets. I have heard differing opinions on whether weed greens should be added to a compost pile. If the pile gets hot enough, won't it kill off the weed seeds anyway? Also, how much green should there be in the pile? Is it just a 50/50 green and brown mix?

I am trying to get rid of some of the dandelions in my yard. We were over-run with them. So I try to make sure there are no seed heads that go in my compost. We do put all our grass clippings in the compost so I am sure some seeds get in there as well. I try to get it hot to kill as much of the seeds as possible. You can end up with more weeds if you don't get your compost hot enough to kill the weeds. If you want to kill weeds or bacteria, you can just make a small heap in a solar cooker and that will kill the seeds. My husband says I am too cautious about the weeds but I really hate digging them out.

Gwynn

How do you make a solar cooker? I have seen examples of how to solarize when the weeds are still in the ground, but I don't really want to totally kill off areas of the lawn to do it. I just want to kill the weed seeds that are going to be in the clippings.
