Another reason to make your own compost
Yesterday, I bought one bag each of steer manure, chicken manure, and mushroom compost, supplied by Whitney Farms, whose products I have used for five years and have been pleased with. As I was mixing them with my own compost, what should I find but a used horseshoe, complete with bent nails still in it. I don't know which bag it was in. I had sifted my own compost, so I know it wasn't in mine.
There's just no way of knowing for sure what's in bagged compost.

Wow - I had two horses and a boarder and I never had horse shoes in my horse manure! And it is sold by weight, yes?

Aren't horseshoes lucky? You are going to have a lucky garden this year!
Kind of like finding the prize in the Cracker Jack box...
Maybe Whitney Farms would like their horseshoe back.
But really, quality control with bagged compost seems to be a big issue.

See, that was a free sample from the compost company I am starting. Our name is...
A Swift Kick in Your ____.
We think it's catchy. But, I take it you didn't like the iron we are testing?

A free iron supplement, you say? :nono:
After I give it back to you, be sure to pull it out rounded side first.

It's those "bent nails" that will hurt...me thinks.

Hmm.....
I'm trying to decide if that's as bad as my mom finding spearmint gum in her green beans at a restaurant many years back.

No, Reverend Curlee. It definitely isn 't that bad! That's pretty horrifying.
By the way- how did she know it was spearmint??

Umm.....
Umm....You probably don't want the real answer, so we'll just say, I don't know - maybe it was peppermint? Didn't mean to go off topic, so the real question is - can you compost a horseshoe? And if so, How long before it's cured? It would probably be great to add extra iron to Beets right?

Re: Another reason to make your own compost
Someone was probably playing horseshoes next to the compost pile...
My next compost purchase, I'm searching it for gold teeth.
Time to get a metal detector.
Maybe use the metal detector at the store before you buy the compost...
haha

Re: Another reason to make your own compost
There are worse places you could find a horseshoe!
LOL! Oh, all the comments I could make here but I will restrain myself.
Somehow I doubt anyone was playing horseshoes with shoes that had nails still in them. You have to wonder about the quality of the compost you buy.
Guess there is no need to wish you good luck with your gardening since you have all the luck from the forum and then some on your side.

Exactly, Gwynn. What's the next thing that compost will produce? A four-leaf clover patch?
The comment about "how'd you know it was spearmint?" was hilarious!! Errr, and a bit gross.

Re: Another reason to make your own compost
I once found a broken plate in the truck load of food waste compost I bought.
