fuzzy white spots on zucchini stem

I don't know if you can see it very well, but my zucchini plant's stem is developing several white fuzzy spots. Anyone know what it might be?
Thanks,
Tracy

On closer examination, it looks like it may be the beginnings of new growth. Leaves, flowers or stems, I'm not sure. Can anyone confirm this, or is it some kind of fungus?

I'll try and get a better picture.
I actually harvested our first little zucchini today because I couldn't wait any longer. It was about 3 inches long, and it tasted amazing!!! The 5 year old even liked it (wahoooooooo!!!!!)

Gee Tracy,
It is hard to tell from the photo but what is plain to see is the plant looks very healthy other wise. Keeping my fingers crossed for you and hoping it is new growth.

fuzzy white spots on zucchini stem
Tracy,
I just noticed what looks like the same thing on my zucchini plants. It looks like they're trying to put out roots! There's a little white appendage coming from a couple of the spots on my zucchini, low on the stalks. They're looking very healthy and putting on zucs pretty steadily, so I don't think it's anything harmful. I think the plant might just be trying to put out fresh roots. How are your zucs doing? Do you notice what looks like roots trying to grow from the spots?

Yep, I've got pretty much exactly what you described. Looking real good otherwise. We've actually eaten two little guys already. Yummy!

Feeder roots are typical of vining squash, pumpkins, etc. I'm pretty sure that is just the node from whence it comes. I think I see a feeder root in your picture coming from that spot reaching for the soil.
