I Love Lightbulbs
I love it when out of the blue a lightbulb hits you like a ton of bricks. Today I was sitting work looking out the window watching the maintance guy at work mow the lawn and bag the clippings while I was waiting for the next customer to walk through the door. When....BAM!!!! Lightbulb. I need to get some more green matter for my compost pile and I don't have a bagger for my lawnmower. Why not ask the maintance man if I can take a bag of the clippings. I ended up with a big industrial sized garbage bag full of fresh grass clippings.
Heck yeah!!!!!!

Did you check to see if it had been treated in any way?
no they don't do anything but put fertilizer on the grass and I am not sure if they have even done that yet this year.

That's great. Glad you checked.
As second-year SFGer I am learning heaps on this forum. Now I Know-It-All, lol
But I am finding out new things everyday; I am thinking I will make a list of them.

Very Cool Freebie!! Your compost pile will be in great shape as long as the grass isn't chem treated. If it is let it dry out for a couple of weeks before adding it to your pile. this will help avoid contaminating your compost.

Re: I Love Lightbulbs
I bet he was more than happy to give them to you, too. He may look for you from now on. Those of us that cut grass for a living hate finding ways to dispose of clippings. Trips to the landfill cost money, and we only have so much space at the shops to store/pitch stuff.
Although, you may have just given ME a small light bulb. As I grow, this becomes a bit of a problem, even more so in the fall with leaves. Why not start a HUGE compost pile behind the shop, fence it off, and sell it once it's ready. You just go 4x4x4 at a time with a couple of piles and toss the finished product into a larger, single pile.
Hmmmmmmm. Thanks for sharing.

Re: I Love Lightbulbs
BBG, I posted a link to St Louis's free compost place a while back, have you asked them if they take clippings? I'll try to remember where I posted that link, after more coffee.
Re: I Love Lightbulbs
Probably because of composting laws. I was talking to my local farmer's/roadside market guy and he said he can only compost what he can personally use. If he trys to sell it, he gets in the a bunch of state laws and permits. I had hoped to buy some from him.

Can he 'give' you some? You could always 'give' him something as well......say money or a pie or something?
