How do I adjust my planting times?

Example: Tomatoes . . .
book states . . .
summer only as the growing season. . .
earliest outdoor planting immediately after last spring frost.

I have no spring frost, last frost was January 21, I believe. Actually I think we seldom ever have frost.
Plus I have some trouble with tomatoes in summer when it gets too hot.
I have had success with outdoor planting of tomatoes in October that yielded 1st tomatoes in late January through summer.

My question is . . .
If I know this about tomatoes how do I adjust planting times for other fruits and vegetables from what is printed in the book?
I am in zone 10a, or Sunset Western Garden Zone 22, Southern California.

That lists frost dates for areas in california. Unfortunately I don't see your specific town/area. Doing some Google work, I hear california has some fun issues with microclimates. That would explain the odd dates for some places(Alturas Last Frost: 7/16 First Frost: 8/9...really? How does anything grow there?).

it too late for me to plant vegetables listed as spring or summer only? When is it too soon or too late for vegetables listed as fall. What can I plant, like I did with my tomatoes, in late fall?

Beginning on page 192 of the ANSFG book Mel listed several vegetables and the seasons in which they can be planted. That should be a good start.

If you google search the specific plants you should be able to find temperature ranges for them. In theory, you can grow them so long as the temperature is right.

For instance, Tomatoes do not tolerate temperature at or below freezing, and generally grow poorly if the weather is not above 70°F. So, these are summer plants.

ETA: Disregard that last part. I see you don't have frost dates in your area.

I actually have the California Master Gardeners Handbook. Their literature is NOT in agreement.

The link below says to plant artichokes, in my area, October-December. The next link says to plant them May-July

I'm in Bloomington, I think maybe 45 miles from you. I put in beans, both bush & pole this month, plus kale, chard & carrots. I also just today replaced one of my tomato plants and added another determinant one in a pot.

I picked a bunch of lettuce this week that was planted in march, black seeded simpsons. I taste tested it in the garden and some seemed bitter. I gave the worst to the goats but brought in a bunch to try. After washing & refrigerating it tastes great - no bitter taste. There is still a little left in the garden. Think I will try bringing it in too and do a in the garden versis washed & refrigerated taste test.

This is my 1st year, so I am no expert but most things are growing very well in my garden beds(with wire bottoms) whereas I have lost everything to gophers before.

In that case call your county extension office. They'll be better suited to give you information for your specific area.
