Need Help on Cutting off Sprouts Empty Need Help on Cutting off Sprouts

I'm totally confused about this and need some help!

I planted mostly 2-3 seeds in each hole for spinach, lettuce, kale, etc. Now that I have sprouts, am I supposed to cut all off only leaving one? In the book he says to snip them all and leave the strongest one but how do I know which is the strongest? Need Help on Cutting off Sprouts 601593

I've had sprouts for about 2 weeks now and so afraid to snip lol. I know I need to do this now because they are really growing. Thanks in advance for the help!

Homekeeper, I think GreenBlueberry's answer is just right.

Leave the one that looks the best: strongest stem, biggest leaves, prettiest!

Ok, so with the spinach, I can't tell if this is one plant or what? The long leaves came up first and then then shorter ones in the middle came up this week. Just so confused lol!

Need Help on Cutting off Sprouts 002-1

Then with the sugar snap peas, I can't remember how many I planted in one hole - I think I did just one because it looks like there is only one in each, what do you all think?

Last question on this reply - with the carrots, do I trim the tops off on all but one too? There are a LOT of carrot tops in each hole!

Homekeeper, that first picture is a single spinach plant. They have two long skinny seed leaves per plant, then the first true leave come out and their shape is completely different, but exactly as shown on your picture.

The peas are showing just one plant per hole and they look good.

Carrots, they will have two seed leaves that are kind of long like the spinach, but very fine. Then the true leaves will come up kind of lacy looking between the two seed leaves. Yes, you really want to cut out all carrot but one for each hole. I know, it feels like genocide, but it is necessary for you to have nice carrots.

Looks good! I remember the first year I did SFG (or any gardening for that matter) I pulled up a few "real" plants because I didn't know about the seed leaves. I thought "those don't look like carrots, they must be weeds". They weren't. Lucky you have folks here to keep you from making my mistake!

There are so many leaves that I can't tell what is what, I guess I let them grow too long. Should I just guess and snip? I'm supposing that is my only option - I'm going to try and get closer to them and cut tomorrow. It does feel like a genocide lol. Sad

for your carrots....wait for them to get a little bigger....you will be able to tell them apart...even if they are sitting right on top of each other.....start at the top of your square and compare two carrots next to each other....then keep the one that looks thicker and pull out the thinest one.....keep going across making sure you have 16 per square at the end.....they should end up being....i think an inch apart Very Happy

Rose, I agree that if Homemaker leaves the thinning until later, it will be easier to tell the plants apart. But please don't pull to thin the extra plants. If there are too many, cut the excess off.

If you pull and the root comes up, you may damage the one you are trying to leave.

16 carrots per square is 3 inches apart. I think if your carrots really did do well, and you left them 1 inch apart, they might actually push each other out of the ground.
