We've been hit by it once or twice since then, but nothing more than a drive by. I had clothes on the line Sunday, ran out to get them off, and put some of the animals up, then it tapered off. We did see the 2 horses in the pasture behind us running the whole pasture while it was raining. They were litterally running in the rain, it was awesome.

Cooked watermelon-I know it's not funny, but it kinda is. You can tell your grandchildren about how it was so hot one summer, that when it rained it cracked your watermelon.

Tomato suckers? For those you just have to stick them in soil & they will root. I usually bring them inside & let them root. I only bought 10 tomato plants but now I have 40. When it was cooler I just stuck them in the ground.

Like petals said, just bring them in and put them in water to let them root, I did this with 2 Amish Paste, but they did not survive, and then the goats ate the ones outside-should have had goat for dinner.

Anyway, here is a video on identifying suckers (and stringing tomatoes)

Here is an article on rooting suckers.

tomato tues for lower south - Page 3 Empty My tomatoes have had it!

Post  littlejo 8/22/2011, 8:41 pm

My beefsteak tomatoes were on there last leg, just a few green tomatoes, no new blooms. I had decided to pick all the green ones and have fried green toms.(Even have some to freeze)

Went out to the garden to water, and after all the heat and drought, the hornworms have arrived. Fed 10 very large ones to the fish in the pond. Gosh, I was mad, for I've not had much troubles with bugs on the bushes. About half of the tomatoes had been chewed on. I think I got them all, but will check again in the am.

Do these hw. bother any other plants?

Is there anything I could put out to deter or kill them?

How is everyone else's tomatoes doing?

I've been pretty amazed for the garden is still going strong in this heat, and I'm trying to figure where do I put a winter crop, with summer stuff still growing.

Between the chickens and the goats, I only have 1 tomato plant left in the garden, and 3 on my shelf outside my kitchen window. Anyone know anyone who can put up a chicken yard (I have all we need) and fix the gate on the goats pen?

As an answer to my question about how/where to put a winter garden. The hurricaine should finish off the summer veggies, so if there is dirt left, then I can plant for winter.

I pulled all viable veggies this am in prep., now we hope it goes to the north of us.

I hope so too, but just in case, if you get any storm surge (which may be very unlikely) check your soil, that stuff adds a lot of salt to everything. Keep us posted.
