Brown flying beetles in STL? Empty Brown flying beetles in STL?

This week there have been some brown flying beetles that I have noticed. Does anyone know what these might be? Is it something I should be concerned about? I don't have any netting up over my plants right now b/c they are starting to flower. What kinds of things are recommended to keep insects from destroying gardens?

Sounds like May Beetles. They are flying around in WV now too. At night they fly up against the window screens and they do make a racket!

The larvae (grubs) feed on roots and decaying vegetation. The adult beetles do eat leaves, but I have never seen them eating anything in my garden or known them to be a problem in the garden. Maybe someone else here on the forum has a different experience with them.

Isn't it funny how some people call them "May Beetles"? We have always called them "June Bugs". Smile Somehow "May Beetles" sounds more professional.... cutesie

Yea, LOL, we always called them June bugs, never heard them called May bugs beofore.Don't have June bugs up North but my naturally curly hair remembers them well from my California childhood. Ugh. Shudder. Friggin' blind as a bat those things...used to get caught up in my hair all the time. Not missing THEM here in cold country. If we had them here they would have to be called August Bugs I guess, cause that is the only time it might be as warm here as it was in California in June.

I also remember the shiny iridescent green buggers that are blind as bats too. (Funny enough, in Cali growing up, they are called June bugs too, Japanese June bugs. But I just read when hunting for a picture that they are technically called figeater beetles) Ugh! I don't miss the bugs in the southern half of the US. I need a big photo of these on my fridge, then when I complain about snow or rain I will go remind myself why I love it here.

Kids used to catch these green monsters, (they get over an inch to 2 inches long) and flip them on their back and tie a kite string to their leg and then "fly them".

Middlemamma, my brother and I did the kite string thing on June bugs when we were little too! Although it was Mom's sewing thread.

This is a May Beetle, although some folks call them June beetles.:

They call these June Bugs here in SD. I had never seen on in CA, but they are a yearly arrival here. I have already seen a few as roadkill!
