SWEET! I just found my winter's entertainment. Thanks, Kel, for resurrecting this thread.LentilSoup wrote:Ok, I'm going to come clean... what with the talk of computer journals and all... I'm keeping a physical journal in a moleskine notebook AND I'm doing an online journal here:

I actually found out about Folia from a post on this forum, I think. I've really been enjoying it! Still, I can't quite bring myself to fully trust online stuff, which is why I'm also keeping a physical notebook journal too.
Re: Garden Journal
I'm adding another "sheet" to your spreadsheet for my journal. I'm going to copy and paste from my posts here, to make sure I don't forget anything. I also keep a hardcopy notebook to keep track of plantings. I have folders of images. After Christmas I'll try to organize it all and make it fun and pretty.AtlantaMarie wrote:Everything I do is in that spreadsheet. Then I can copy from year to year....
Re: Garden Journal
for bringing this back. (I thought it was Kelejan ). Doncha love Tril's avatar? I can't wait to try "myfolia" but it might not happen until after the holidays. I'm buried in fun stuff right now.Ginger Blue wrote:Several years have passed since this thread was last in play. Just wondering what methods of logging/journaling folks are using these days.
If you've purchased a gardening journal book/scrapbook/binder that you use (and like), what kind is it and where did you get it? What types of information does it include places for, and what is it missing that you wish it had?
I'm good with Word and Excel, but recognize the value in maintaining information offline, as well. Although many of you encouraged me to keep a journal for my gardens this year, I wasn't organized enough to actually do it. It's not exactly a "New Year's resolution," but this is something I'd like to do, going forward.
I have a "myfolia" account, but the site seems awkward to me and haven't really used it. Do any of you find it valuable? Perhaps I should check it out, again?
Re: Garden Journal
Running a master eXcel sowing chart , a sheet for each seed variety & type you have in your PC is ideal if you can do the tapping in on the keyboard without the memory crashing just as you get to the third line from the end .
On my old MS platform no matter how much I hit save , it always crashed on an eXcel document that was open for much more than 20 minutes .
I now use Ubuntu as my platform & a different computer .
( I'm still learning " how to " with lots of thing for Ubuntu but that's another matter )
What I'm now also doing is using a paid for cloud storage set up to send everything too & get it back from ,
I got sick of losing everything when MS & the computer decided to pay up especially when MS sent me automatic new updates etc .
My ANSFG work book is similar to an eXcel one , it is stored safely on the cloud . So I have no worries about my PC dying , someone stealing it or the old add on 500 gig memory store not taking the info .
When I press save it's automatically down loaded to the cloud apparently .

Re: Garden Journal
I have a journal, Excel seed chart that I update, print out and pencil in for year, and and Excel plot plan printed out for each summer and winter crop and pencil in.

No! No!, Country Naturals, it was Ginger Blue who brought it back. Credit where it's due, and all that. Thanks! Ginger Blue.
Re: Garden Journal
Sanderson mentioning her excel plotter reminded me that I do the same on another page of my spreadsheet. I've got my garden plotted out with spaces to write in what I've got in each sq ft.

Thanks Kelejan!

I'm loving it. Gonna work some more on my journal, tonight. The rain has already started, and supposed to continue non-stop for 3 days and nights, so the timing is perfect.
Re: Garden Journal
My notes are all on my mighty iPad. Notes. I have 3 basic yearly threads; plans, execution, and results. Always different!
I also use the sketch app to actually map out what is going where. I have 4 re-purposes window boxes and a 4x4. Might add a 4x4 for strawberries next year. That was also in plans for this past season!
For the seeds under lights etc I use paper with a grid so I can keep track of what is in which cell. That is a living thing. I also use that (paper) for direct seeding. Also noted in the actual SFG document.
Planning/Actual SFG/Results=planning changes! My motif.
I do not do daily entries. Only will occasionally to keep track of last/first frost dates.

Re: Garden Journal
Making progress! My "journal" is now in 3 places and soon to be 4.
I added sheet 3 to Marie's spreadsheet and made it 2 columns -- a narrow "code" column and a wide text column.
The first column either has the date if it's a chronological entry, or a code like MSC for miscellaneous, BFLY for butterfly info, etc.
If the entry is plant specific, it goes on sheet 1 in the notes for that plant.
If it has to do with seed planting, it goes in my hardcopy notebook.
I tweaked the "data sort" feature so it didn't have headings, then tried sorting the whole thing. It worked great. No matter how I enter the info, sorting puts the dated items first, in date order, then the other entries in alpha order by whatever code I enter. YEE-HAH!
While trying to figure out what to do with photos, I discovered a "presentation" app. I'm on the free download "Open Office" but I'm betting this is the equivalent of "Powerpoint" for MS Office users. I probably won't have time to figure it out before Christmas, but it looks awesome. I will be able to put my pics in album/slideshow format with detailed descriptions under each one. LIFE IS GOOD!

It's funny how three letters Kel can cause such a kerfuffle*, but not as bad as badmouthing one's CEO via email and inadvertently sending to BCC. which was everyone in the company. Only recently our Seniors' group newsletter writer did the same thing, and thought that it did not matter.
* A Brit. Colloq word. I checked to make sure I had not made it up.
Re: Garden Journal
Bringing this thread back again.
I am absolutely pathetic when it comes to keeping garden records. I have hand written notes on various pieces of paper (some loose, some in manila folders, some in binders). I have a couple of spreadsheets (e.g., a vegetable seed spreadsheet). And I use my "nn Year SFG in Canada" threads for some record keeping.
I promised myself I would go back through my notes, my Third Year SFG thread, my memory, etc. and summarize what I did in 2017, what I planted, what I changed/added to the SFG, what was good bad, what went right/wrong, etc. But I never could bring myself to do it. So I'll probably continue to make the same mistakes over and over again.
I found a printable Garden Notebook which may be useful for some of us. I like some of the sheets. I'm thinking as well that they could be used as models for Excel Spreadsheets or Word documents. But knowing me I probably will continue in my haphazard approach.

TD, you are not alone! I do take notes in my iPad “notes” app, with varying attention to detail. I do 3 basically each season: YEAR plan, YEAR progress, YEAR in review and changes/dreams for next season!

I looked back at this thread. I also plan out on paper by bed what will go where, so I can know how much of each plant I can grow.trolleydriver wrote:SR ...
