Just wanted to let everyone know, Lowe's has Pre-fab, plastic boxes 46"x46"x5.5". It's not the perfect dimensions, but they pieced together in a minute, you can stack them or put them together to make longer boxes. They also come with stakes to anchor them to the ground. The price is only $40 which is about half the price of other ones I found online.

I saw a similar type thing at Home Depot! Don't remember the price though...

Edite, saw them at Walmart also, looks like the one at Lowes or similar for about $37?

Howdy:

Lowe's has Regional Distribution Centers throughout the U.S. It is frustrating to be able to get V. on the west coast but not on the East.

God Bless, Ward.

If you were to build your box with nominal 6" width lumber, the actual width is 5.75" - and that's what Mel recommends... so I guess that the 5.5" height is close enough

The ones at Home Depot close to me were 4x4' x 6" and cost $40.00 for the regular and $60.00 for the cedar. I didn't look closely enough to see how they go together.

Pre-Fab box at lowes Empty Frame it All

Post  ralitaco 4/11/2010, 7:47 pm

I saw a neat system at my local garden center. It was made by frame it all. they have a website. Their stuff is a bit pricey, but it will never rot and the curved boards were neat.

These seem nice, and they have attachments available. If you can't get the link, it's home depot, brand "frame it all". I don't have them, so I can't say for sure, but they do seem nice.

I noticed that Sam's Club is carrying something similar for $52. They claim to be stackable and require no tools. Which is a major drawback for my hubby Pre-Fab box at lowes Icon_wink ...but might be nice for elderly gardeners.

Wow! I didn't think to look at sam's club! It has odd dimensions (3x7), but at least it's even feet, and can still be a SFG!

Oh I was just posting for reference. I already have my self built boxes so I just snapped some cell phone pictures on my last Garden Center visit in case I ever needed to share with anyone.

With that in mind the jury is out on the evils of the current pressure treated woods. The old chemicals used for pressure treating were very bad but apparently the new stuff and the new methods have been proven (by some sources) to be safe. There are a couple references to that found here on the forum. Of course for all I know these kits are made in China with no regulation and the worst of all possible chemicals so who knows.

Post  robbinscabin 4/12/2010, 8:48 pm

I am always leary of that too. My father and I had quite the debate regarding whether or not to use PT lumber as garden boxes. I used rough cut 2x8's so I could vary the depth of "soil". He insisted that they would need replaced too often and that I should've used Pressure Treated lumber. But the Mom in me just made me stand there stubbornly shaking my head. Pre-Fab box at lowes Icon_evil The point of SFG is to be chemical free. Why would I want the chemicals that are used on the wood to seep into the "soil" and be absorbed by my veggies. He called me a worrywort... To which I replied, "You're right. Let your grandkids eat the chemi-veggies." He quickly saw my point! It's so rare to win a fight with Dad. Pre-Fab box at lowes Empty Non-Treated Wood Rotting - HELP!

Post  Gardeningrookie 4/17/2010, 6:45 pm

Hi Everyone,

I'm a first time SFG and I followed Mel's advice and bought regular wood, not treated with anything. (Yeah, I don't prefer chemicals in my food either!) We've had the boxes up for about 2 weeks and have also received an unusual amount of rain for our area and season.

Today we noticed mildew at the corners and against the sides where the dirt/Mixture touches the wood. Now, I've only planted the flowers, no veggies yet but the veggie box is built with the same supplies. Also, the wood has some blackish streaks on it that look like mildew type stuff as well...it's not fuzzy or raised but it looks like the water sat in the wood and got gross. Just an FYI, we did cut holes in the bottom of the plywood.

What's going on?? Obviously I don't want chemicals in the dirt but nor do I want mildew.

Suggestions??

Thanks,
Janet

Have you a photo? Is it the plywood or the planks showing black? Also, what is your location?

Pre-Fab box at lowes Empty Mildew

Post  Gardeningrookie 4/17/2010, 8:58 pm

It is the planks showing the mildew although, honestly, I haven't looked at the very bottom of the box; that part may be "mildewy" as well.

I live in Kyle, Texas (a few minutes from Austin) so central Texas. The last week or so we've had lots of rain (*very* unusual) so I think it's an issue of just too much water. BUT, still, how can I get rid of it and do I need to do something to the other box so that this doesn't happen next time we get rainy weather? The boxes are flush with the ground. Maybe that's part of the problem?

I'll take a photo tomorrow and post.

Thanks,
Janet

It does sound like a case of untreated wood in contact with soaking wet ground. I would think sunshine would resolve the problem but how far gone might the wood be by then? Hmmm....

Where I live the local joke is: we don't tan, we rust. Untreated wood exposed to damp air will begin to show mildew symptoms like you describe. For instance, rafters in carports and deck roofs will show the stains, even though they haven't been directly exposed to rain. A 1:10 bleach to water solution will eliminate it. We don't worry about it.

I don't know about the toxicity of mildew. I don't believe it causes a spore problem like mold can.

Pre-Fab box at lowes Empty Photos and Update

Post  Gardeningrookie 4/18/2010, 6:36 pm

Thanks for the information everyone! So it sounds as though we can pretty easily get rid of the mildew/mold/whatever that is on the outside of the boxes. Now, the question is, what about the inside where the dirt touches the sides. That mildew/mold/whatever is a whitish color. Check out the photos.
