First Tromboncino female flower

Can't believe how big it's gotten even before opening! So excited to grow this variety! The first time I planted it didn't come up, so it's a couple weeks behind the rest of my squash and seemed to take forever before starting to flower. But now there are a half dozen females ready to take off...this is just the first/largest.

Wow, beautiful squash, almost ready to cook, from the looks of it. The tromboncino is my favorite summer squash...been growing it since early 90s, when it was called a zucchetta. Because the seed cavaty is on the end where the flower forms, the majority of the squash is seedless and firmer than zucchini, which makes it nice to shred, pack into freezer bags and freeze for use in mid-winter for zucchini bread, or zucchini latkes because there's no puddle of water lik a zucchini leaves.

Probably lots of other places; perhaps one of larger farmers' markets will have some plants for sale. WARNING, though, like zucchini, the squashes can quickly grow very large. Left too long, they become almost as hard as a gourd, and end up looking like something a caveman would use to bludgeon enemies.

Baker Creek has it as Zucchino Rampicante (same thing).

I got mine from The Sample Seed Shop which is great for this kind of thing because you certainly don't need more than 30 of these seeds. First Tromboncino female flower 656620

I was going to hand pollinate it, but there was a bee busy in the male flower I was going to use, so I think it'll be ok Wink

If trombocino and rampicante are the same thing, LOOK OUT!

Does anyone remember the 240 feet of vines on the rampicant that took over Virginia last October?

Yup! I've got it positioned accordingly. We'll see how it survives the deep south Texas summer! Between the SVB that has already taken out half my plants and the PM that has killed all my previous squash plantings, I'm not thinking we'll get that extreme!

i know this is an old post...but does anyone have the info on the 240 feet of vine? our squash are just starting to take off. I'd love to see the pics of the giant one!!

Wow the fruit behind the female flower gets that big before the flower is even pollinated? Or does the flower just not do the normal quick fold-up and dry-out that squash flowers usually do?

yes, they get that big! ours are going crazy on our arch trellis!! They are about 10-12 inches before the flower opens. We have one maturing that's probably about 2 1/2 feet!! I think we have about 8 big ones SO far! A mole got in the bed, and disrupted the roots, so a bunch aborted, but now I'm getting good babies again!! super cool squash to grow, the grandkids love them! When we get a squash big enough for my grandson to "bonk" his head on, we're gonna go get hamburgers and a milkshake and have a picnic Smile

This is my favorite squash to grow. The vines really get huge, which in my book is a good thing. The vines will re-root along the ground and this will help with the squash vine bore. I let the squashes grow huge at the end of summer, get a hard outer skin (so you cannot nick the skin with your fingernail) and save them for winter eating. You can use them like butternut squash. I thought it was a neat feature of the squash that you can grow both summer and winter squash from the same plant and eat the seeds. I have grown 7-9 pound squashes multiple times from this plant and lost a swing set to the vines. Enjoy your harvest.

if you like butternut, you might like Delicata. Ours are really coming on, and they are really good! Sort of like a sweet potato?? AND you can eat the skins!!

I DO! like delicata! I've only had them a couple of times, but they were nice and sweet. I also like patty pans, which are a bit bland, but tender, really cool-looking, and strike me as especially easy to grow. I also like spaghetti squash, but haven't tried too many different types of squashes yet. I think my favorite squash dish is butternut squash soup -- and those squashes are expensive in the store!!!! Fifteen bucks for some of the big ones.

I LOVE spaghetti squash. prob my favorite squash. I'm sooo mad. I planted them in my trellis bed, only to discover they're determinate Sad

SVB got my butternuts and they had small squash on the vines. But I will replant next week.
