Question about 2nd year for SFG Empty Question about 2nd year for SFG

Post  lolamei 4/26/2011, 1:32 pm

Hi! I am new to the forum AND gardening. Last summer I had a very small but successful SFG. It was a great experience and I am ready to go again!

Here is my question: my box sat out all winter with its cage on top to keep the cats out. It definitely looks like it is below the 6 inch line. Do I just do a new batch of Mel's Mix and throw it on top and mix it up?

I am hoping to do some spring planting this weekend and see what happens. Thanks for your advice.

This is my second year as well and my mix definitely settled a good 2 inches over the winter. However, I just added a little compost and fluffed it back up by hand and it filled the entire 6 inches again.

Always nice to welcome a new member.

I agree with Glasshen, just add some compost and fluff up your mix. It is common to see the Mel's Mix settle, when first filling your box and adding the necessary water to rehydrate the mix, and also when the mix has set out all winter.

No need to add more Mel's Mix, you just want to bump up the nutrtion level that would have been depleted by last years crops. Don't forget to add a scoop of compost everytime your harvest this year. It replaces the nutrients as you go.

Again, welcome, and please share you progress this year. We I love you pictures.

Thanks!! That makes life much easier. I am excited to try spring vegetables this year- last year building the box and frame took most of our spring energy.

Glad to find this forum!
