Vermiculite- southern NH
I know there's a forum already for this, but I'm hoping the people in this area can help. I have not been able to find ANYone who carries vermiculite in the southern NH area. I've checked the sources listed on the database and there is no way I can spend $75+ (that was the cheapest I found with shipping) for it. I've asked around at the local hardware store, the big box home improvement stores, and local gardeners and no one has any idea where to get it. I also read through the Vermiculite forum and researched all the other options listed there. No luck. Where did y'all get yours?
If I can't find anything I will skip and just keep an eye on my garden but I'd like to use it in mine and in the one at work. Especially work, since I won't have much time to devote to it.

Re: Vermiculite- southern NH
Where are you located? Maybe I can help you hunt some up.
I also had trouble and was unable to locate plain vermiculite locally. I resorted to using seed starting mix (mixture of peat, perlite and vermiculite, greensand and limestone) that I bought at Agway and Horse and Buggy Feed store.
I used the seed starting mix and added my different composts for a nice, as close as I'm gonna get mix.

muffinator, do you have any aquaponic stores near your home or work? I'm not in NH but it was actually the least expensive source for me.

OOhh, good job Walsh! But it seems that vermiculite is not listed on their website They seem to make filters and permeable membranes and stuff for many applications...
This inground pool installer in Amherst, NH may be a good place to call. Is this anywhere near you Muffin?

This link shows vermiculite as one of the products for Lydall. May still be worth a phone call.

Re: Vermiculite- southern NH
Thanks Walsh, I went to multiple Lydall websites and didn't find
vermiculite listed, nor did it appear when I used the site search
feature. Agreed, it would be worth a phone call, though I get the feeling they sell to industry and not retail.

Re: Vermiculite- southern NH
LOL, I had to Google aquaponic to find out what it was, so that's a nope.
I'll give Lydell a call on Monday and see if they sell, or at least can suggest anything. They didn't come up at all in any of my searches, but of course I was using a public computer with filters, so maybe that had something to do with it. I spoke to the people at my local Aubechon hardware and they said that the Agway in Conway has some, but it's too far away for me to drive. Then someone else spoke up and mentioned that there's an Agway in Dover, which isn't too far away. Again, I will call them Monday. Blue Seal in Rochester was also mentioned. Aqua specialties (they sell pools) was mentioned as a remote possibility as well, but I wouldn't have high hopes for them.
I might have luck with Lydell as a manufacturing place since I'm soliciting donations for work so may be able to work out a deal with them or get them to let me use a PO.
Lawrence is a bit far away as well (further than Conway) but again, they might be able to give me someone closer.
Thanks for all the suggestions- I'll be able to work with this Monday! I appreciate it.
Camprn, I'll PM you with my area, I've got a nasty EX that I don't want finding me so don't want my local public. (just got my cats microchipped because he's threatened to find me and take them)

Well, I haven't had a chance to call the companies listed above yet, but I did get to stop at Blue Seal today. The kid at the counter didn't even know what the BM8 was or what vermiculite was. Sigh. He wasn't interested in really helping either. I'll keep looking though. Maybe Gooch's in Nottingham will be more help. They're usually willing to special order things so I'll try them as well.

Re: Vermiculite- southern NH
Oh dear, I wish I had tuned into this thread earlier.
I got my verm. at Agway in Dover. Blue Seal should be able to order it for you too, just ask the order person.
I don't believe they have it in stock a lot, for one thing it's expensive and they probably don't want to be stuck with it. I don't think a lot of people buy it.
BUT - they had it in stock at Agway when I went twice, but barely.
If I can help you, let me know. I'm in the seacoast area.

muffinator - Call first, because if they don't have it in stock they can order it for you and maybe it'll be in by this weekend. Or if they do have it, maybe they can set a bag aside for you. I believe my bags are 4 c.f. and I believe they cost about $25 ea.

Yikes! That's my food budget for the week.
I'll still check it out, but I think I'll have to go with a seed mix like Camprn's BM8 mix this year and save up more for next year.

muffinator - Tell me about it. When I bought the verm. I didn't ask what the price was. After I paid for it I was like, wait a minute, WHAT? I checked the receipt, and then it was verified on this forum that yeah, that stuff is $$$.

Hi Everyone--
I may be too late to be helpful but when I was starting my first SFG last year I found vermiculite at Beaver Valley Farms on Main Street in Pelham. Also Countrybrook Farms in Hudson was willing to special order it for me. It was not expensive as I recall.

Howdy Judy:
Good info on the vermiculite source. If you have not posted it to the vermiculite database please do so.

Re: Vermiculite- southern NH
I just got off the phone with the Dover NH Agway, and the gentleman I spoke with said they have it in stock! They sell three sizes- 4 cubic feet, 18 quart, and 8 quarts. They are $27, $15.29, and $5.99 respectively. (I added it to the database). I'll do some budgeting and pick some up at some point... lol.

Re: Vermiculite- southern NH
Alright!!!!
I was there this morning, picking up mite control for my poor chickies, whose legs I found last night being feasted on by hungry mites in the coop... yuck. And while I was there, I picked up an extra 3 bags of Agway composted cow manure just in case my compost mixture is lacking in manure. Altho I really really like their Coast of Maine products better.
Oh, and then I came home and emptied 21 bags of compost onto a tarp outside, to blend together. I feel like I just got hit by a truck. And that's before mixing it with the verm & peat, which I'll do in smaller quantities to fill each box. But LATER, after recuperating a little...
OH, and I found one earthworm in my bags! It was from a bagged cow manure I had bought from Lowes. Ha.

LOL, I bet we just missed each other. I was there at about noon. I had to hit Dover anyway, so stopped in to take a look. Their cat is adorable, but I feel bad for him/her in the cage all day.

I should say that I completely do not blame them for protecting their cat this way. In their place I would do the same. I'm just a soft touch when it comes to cats. Heck, I feel bad for my three stuck in my apartment while I'm at work all day!
