Is anyone else's Mel's mix working as much overtime as mine in the drainage department? If you live anywhere near me (Cincinnati), you are resting well knowing that your soil is not becoming water-logged during this record breaking? rainy season because we did, in fact, use the greatest soil concoction ever known to man.

Yup....haven't worried about mine in days....and I won't be watering until Thursday for Friday according to the forecast.

However, there are those in drought conditions I'd be happy to share this rain with. Everything balances out.....in time.

With excess rain, does the compost leach out nutrients quickly?

How often do you hear the advice to add/mix in compost or amendments to existing soils around plants, then to 'water in' the stuff; the water will then carry the nutrients to the roots?

If that gardening advice is to be believed, then it makes sense to me that water going into the top of a box is carrying away nutrients when it comes out the bottom of the box.

That's the main reason that I started covering all my boxes in the off-season. I get a lot of winter rain. I visualize all the nutrients dripping out the box bottoms.

Is that how it works? I don't have a clue!

I figure that's why the grass is always greener over the septic tank.... stuff probably does leach out of the box. I figure that's why we put in a trowel full of compost when we harvest the square. Good idea to cover the boxes for the winter... I will have to start doing that!
