new book vs. old book

I bought the original book years ago, and I always followed the directions for planting the seeds directly in the garden soil (layout each square with your finger, poke holes with a pencil, place seed in each hole, and backfill with vermiculite). I read the new book, and it no longer discusses this. The new book only discusses planting seeds in cups of vermiculite for transplanting into the garden later. Has anyone else noticed that?

Never read the old book i just recently purchased the new book and this is my first season doing SFG but from what ive gathered amongst the chatter here on the forums there have been a few improvments in the method from when the original book was written most say that the new book has made everything easier i cant really be ajudge since i never ead the original book
