Hello from Maryland's Eastern Shore
Hello!
I'm brand-new to this forum. I started last year with one 4'x4'x6" SFG and had moderate success. Mostly herbs and some peppers.
This year, I'm adding a 4'x8'x12" box and hope to do some root veggies. We'll see how it goes!

Re: Hello from Maryland's Eastern Shore

Glad to have ya.
When you say you had moderate success what do you mean? Did some of your crops fail? Do you think there are problems with your mix?
It seems that here lately we have found one of two things to be true for those who are having problems with SFG. Either something is wrong with their nutrient level because they didn't use a true 5 way compost or there is too much peat in the box because they forgot/didn't know that they were supposed to fluff the compressed peat before adding it to their box.
Anywho, I hope you decide to stay awhile with us. There really is a great group of people here. We love to see picture of others SFGs, so if you are willing, please share some.
Feel free to ask any questions you might have. We are always eager to help where we can. Also, if you have any tips or tricks that you've learned after SFGing for a year feel free to share them. Knowledge is power. We can all use a little more info.
Also, please check out the regional forums. They are a great place to find region specific information, ask regional questions, and just get to know other SFGers around you.
Take care and happy gardening.

Moderate Success
Cukes did well, once I put up a trellis.
Beans did poorly - some kind of pest pretty much ravaged the plants before they could flower and fruit.
Squash was unimpressive. (I don't remember what type I planted)
Green peppers were tasty, but small. Habaneros were very good.
Herbs did quite well, especially the basil and the rosemary.
I'm picking up plants for transplanting this week, and planted some lettuce in a container yesterday.
Thanks for the input!

Small World
Well, Kim. It's a small world!
I was browsing the Mid-Atlantic forum, and I saw several of your posts. It looks like I also have to say, "Hello!" to a fellow co-worker.
I have been an Adjunct Faculty member at AACC since 2005. I teach paramedic-stuff in the EMT Department.
I may have to hop into your class in September!

Re: Hello from Maryland's Eastern Shore
Thank you, thank you Andy. My FIRST class (Grow Your Food - May 5th) may be cancelled if I don't get 1 more woman to sign up.
I should pay to have my friend take it just so I can teach.
My SFG class in Sep. will be 2 nights (Sep. 21 & 28).

Re: Hello from Maryland's Eastern Shore
I'm in Clarksburg (upper Monkey County, MD), and this is my 2nd year with SFG. I did well last year with peppers and some herbs, but bad with squash (hard and inedible), watermelons (stunted growth at size of baseballs), cukes (hard/inedible), tomatoes (few fruits), etc.
I'm hoping for better results this year.

Thanks, Ha-v-v. I notice Andy didn't volunteer to have a sex change operation so he could join my class.

Re: Hello from Maryland's Eastern Shore

Sorry for the delay in welcoming you to our group, but I have been visiting the grandbaby

I'm from the DC, N VA area but have family on the Eastern Shore.
Nice to have another new member. Hope you and Kim get to meet. I think it is great putting a face to a name.
Last year seemed to be kind of poor for many members, wishing you a truly productive year this time around.
Again, Welcome!
