My Poor Defenseless carrots! Empty My Poor Defenseless carrots!

Post  dizzygardener on 4/15/2011, 12:45 pm

So this morning I go out to my garden to check on thing after having been away from home all week.

What am I confronted with? One of the neighborhood dogs decided to put two paws into my carrot square! They had just sprouted one set of true leaves!

*sigh* I was able to dig them up roots and all and rejuvenate the square, but I'm wondering if it is a lost cause.

I know carrots don't like their roots disturbed. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with disturbing their carrots roots and still getting a good carrot harvest?

I'm going to have to look into getting a fence up.

very sad

Our dog did that, I just decided to leave it alone, and they came up fine.

I wish I could have left them alone, but the paws went in about 3 inches and everything was all lopsided and too close together. I would have only gotten 3 or 4 carrots from that square...

Remember, I have transplanted from vermiculite. Nothing distrubs a root like being yanked from your home. Mine have been fine. I suspect most of them will come around since they were still so young.

And....I've SO been there. But, it's MY dog not some random roamer.

Last year my Sister-in-law accidentally dropped a bunch of carrot seeds in a square she was planting. We weren't going to go digging for them. Who would find those little guys anyway? So, we waited until they started to come up. When they did, we dug them up gently and replanted 16 to the square. They grew just fine.

I think the worst that can happen is the roots are misshapen when they're ready for harvest. But, that would just make them interesting. Very Happy

fun veggie

What do true leaves look like on carrots? I have little bitty green fuzz coming up and a neighbors cat got in the bed. I am working on keeping them out, but they keep hopping the fence.

Thanks Boffer! Mine are miniature versions of that pretty much. Nice to see what things should look like. I think the cats have not disrupted too much.

Dizzy, I hope yours make it!
