But you're right. It's not SFG without a grid. So I put a grid on. I'm sure it will benefit my planting spacing.

Pretty sure it's going to be THE Boff from here on out. That's awesome. what will do well in less than 6"? - Page 2 930802

I will definitely try something like this in the future. But, I can also tell you that I will make mine self-watering with my "pitch." It will alternate the low end so any runout will drop into the next gutter like this...

----------->
<-----------
----------->
<-----------

Another thing: If you don't want them on a rack, you could just run them as a border around your beds. Start on corner 1 as your hi side, and drop the pitch over to corner 2. Corner 2 is higher than corner 3, and so on. Again.....self-watering....sort of.

I got a great image when boffer said he would repurpose them back as gutters when I was thinking he had drainage holes drilled every 12 inches. That gutter would look great on the front of a house. First rain storm, and you'd be back on your roof taking them down....lol. Obviously, you are a smarter man than I because I would be the fool up there kicking myself.

It truly is a great idea. I just couldn't resist the grid-slap.

well now that i see someone has done something like this i'll admit that I want to make a crazy contraption for some strawberries.

A self standing shelving unit of five to six feet high/ 4 shelf rows/ 4 foot row length/ six inches wide/ six inches deep. Positioned so that it gets sun on both sides and after full growth looks like a wall of strawberries(on both sides).

what will do well in less than 6"? - Page 2 Strawb10

kind of like this but on both sides, in between two 2 SFG boxes in a wide enough walking row. Rather than being in the fence wall, I want it to be the wall in between my SFG boxes.

Is this crazy? has anyone seen something like i'm describing other than in a hydroponic growing system.

This one is made from felt, recycled plastic milk cartons and containers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpM3cb_E_-Y&feature=related

I think the basic idea is to make a bookshelf kind of frame with a plywood board backing, plastic over that to keep it waterproof and run a water pipe system to each container. Maybe you would have shelves and the containers sit on them and the felt hides the containers or maybe weed fabric pockets with the containers dropped in which hides the containers.

Haven't thought this one out yet. That guys portable frames on castors has a certain panache I think.

They take up no space if you have fence posts handy. Every weekend, I plant 1 or 2 feet of lettuce.

Exactly.

What a great idea!..First time SFGer here starting out and have a question for boffer..Does the gutter sys have drainage holes and if so are they drilled out through the wood?..
I just love this forum with all the great ideas/knowledge/experience from all you folks..I'm so excited to get started after reading Mel's book and of course all the browsing in this forum..
I have three 4x4 posts already in ground(cement blocks) that I had cut down(some) prior to starting my soon to be greenhouse..They were used for a small deck support, and I said to myself,'think I'm gonna leave those in just in case I need to do something'..And here it is!.. Smile
I was thinking using them for some kind of support/trellis however they run north to south and would block the sun light on the east side greenhouse wall come this spring...Anyhow, they're I go on rambling..Told you I was excited.. Very Happy

Just an FYI, this thread is nearly two years old and sadly Boffer has not been to the forum in many months. I am sure you can find the answers on the web.

LOL< no need to apologize, it is the content of the thread not really the date that is the issue, and besided there is no way you could have known about Boffer being MIA... It's all good. Wink
