unusual colors, anyone?
I'm helping my 12-yr-old neighbor make an edible garden, SFG of COURSE , and I was hoping someone would have suggestions on anything I can grow in different colors or shapes? I have purple and white carrots, three colors of peppers and three colors of potatoes, but if anyone has more suggestions that would be awesome. He and I both enjoy all the colors!!

Some kind of purple bean would be good - or dragon's tongue beans - purple and green!

Try the swiss chard with the multi colored stems. They are soooo cool looking. I found the transplants at Lowes this year. Bonnie plants,

I love to plant Royal Burgundy Bush beans, they have long purple pods that turn green when you cook them, very cool. The grands love to watch and so do I. I also like to plant a wax bean, makes a great color contrast with green beans for the table.

Purple radishes are very nice. Any radish is good for kids because they grow so fast.

I've always wanted to try growing pumpkins in a shape - I know you can put "forms" around pumpkins when they are small and they will grow in the shape of what is around them (Disney World makes them in the shape of Mickey with clear forms like this).
I bet you could do that on a trellis. Maybe grow some small pumpkins and put them in a square form like an orange juice box and make square ones? Even better if you could find something clear so you could watch it grow.
(wonders if she has a spare square left to try pumpkins....hmmmm)

There's also a red carrot, Atomic Red.
In cucumbers there's white, Miniature White and yellow, Lemon and the shape is round like a lemon as well.
The kids will have such fun in their colorful garden.

The Tula tomato is purple. They are heirloom and the seed is available at "Seed Savers" and I have seen some plants at the local nursery.

Re: unusual colors, anyone?
Hey Ashort .... cukes will work for that too. Slip a soda bottle over the cuke when its small, use a sling to support the bottle and the cuke will fit the space (and its faster than pumpkins/gourds).
It's a lot safer now (with plastic containers).
I learned that trick from my dad many years ago ..... and probably ingested a little glass from breaking old Coke bottles to get the cukes......But it seemed like a neat thing at the time

And speaking of cucumbers...you might like to try Lemon cucumbers or Dragon's Egg cucumbers. Although their white, the Dragon's Egg cukes would be fun for any age!

Where are my manners?! I forgot to say . It's good to have you on board!
Please check out the middle south forum. It's a great place to ask region specific questions and get regional information. And, you'll get in tough with other SFGers near you. (I'm only 3 hours north of Atlanta)

hooray!!
Awesome! I am totally trying the striped tomatoes and the purple ones (I don't like tomatoes myself, but I will donate them to my tomato fanatic mother), and putting the cukes in plastic forms, and maybe the purple beans too! SOOOO excited!!!

I am working with some children at our community garden. We are trying all these seeds
Sugar Snap Peas (they can eat raw straight off the vine)
Carrots:
Deep Purple Carrots (purple all the way thru)
Atomic Red Carrots (red ouside, orange in the middle)
White Satin (white all the way thru)
Carnival Carrots (white, red, purple, yellow and orange mix)
Beets
Cylindra Beets (long cylinder shaped red beets)
Touchstone Beets (yellow inside)
Various cauliflower as mentioned by QuiltBea
Red and Green cabbage
Radishes
Rat tail radishes (grow a pod from the stems, not a bulb on the root)
Salad Giant Radish (7-8 inch deep pink, rounded carrot shaped bulb)
Watermelon Radish (round white or pale green skin, and red inside)
Beans for this summer:
Pole beans
Asparagus Beans (yard long style)
Scarlet Emperor (red flowers)
Bush Beans
Soliel (Yellow french fillet type)
Royal Burgundy (purple that changes to green when cooked)
Squash for this summer
One Ball (yellow pool ball sized spheres)
Small Wonder (single serving sized spaghetti squash) on a vine
Sunburst (small deep yellow pattipan shaped squash)
At home I am trying all kinds of peppers, sweet and hot Here are a few
Peruvian Aji Amarillo (turns green, yellow and finally orange at maturity Hot)
Czech Black (a deep purple hot pepper)
Sweet Banana ( a sweet long yellow pepper)
There are so many varieites available, you would have a hard time not finding some different colors and shapes.
Good Luck!

I'm trying Broccoli Romanesco this year, it's sort of between broccoli & cauliflower in a weird pointy spiral shape.
Re: unusual colors, anyone?
There are different colors of pumpkins, too... red, blue, white, black...
Re: unusual colors, anyone?
Blue corn and blue potatoes, no room for me to grow them but you may. I am growing Black from Tula toms and purple bells this year. Lemon boy is a great yellow tom that grows well here in north fl.

Re: unusual colors, anyone?
Last year I had golden peas (snow) with beautiful purple and blue flowers. They grew tall enough to make a shady hut.
This year I have a broccoli kale hybrid called purple peacock.
Some of the salad greens are not green at all. Shades of red, speckles, yellows and purples, they are all awesome from the day that they sprout.
I have a red spinach this year, as well as a light green with dark stripes zucchini.
I have beets that are pink and white striped inside, golden and red beets too.
Beans, as already mentioned, are nearly as flamboyant as lettuce. I have purplish brussels sprouts....but that probably will not interest a 12 year old.
In the fall, at the farmers markets there are so many shades of pumpkin like squashes that you could have a colorful community of goblins this Halloween. Watermelons, another space taker, come in shades of yellow, pink and red once you cut them open.
Raspberries come in yellow, red, purple and black but take more of a commitment than a single season vegetable. Ray bought a pink "blueberry" for the berry garden this spring.
