New to SFG Spring Hill Florida
Hello I live just outside Tampa Florida and want to start a SFG.
Is it too hot to be starting now? What Veggies & Herbs could I plant now.
Does anyone have ideas to get Mels mix from buying at local stores?

Re: New to SFG Spring Hill Florida
Florida has two growing seasons, warm and cool. It's still in the warm season planting time, and early for the cool season.
This link is to a vegatable planting guide prepared by the University of Florida:

Your local county extension office has a wealth of information. Find yours at:

Good luck, and welcome to the SFG forum.

Re: New to SFG Spring Hill Florida
First and foremost, Welcome to the forum.
Please take some time to look around and take a test drive.
The search is on the upper left, Vermiculite database has it's own sub-forum, Regional Host names appear in blue, your regional section would be "Coastal and Tropical South", and the adult beverages are somewhere ....errrr ... I forgot .... so pull up a forum-chair and we'll wing-it from here
As far as "too late to plant" ..... absolutely not.
As far as "what to plant", I'd suggest playing "follow-the-leader" with the folks in your region & if there is a specific crop that you need a yes/no on, just ask.
As far as "supplies" go .... just post up and we'll try to help out where we can.

I should have mentioned in my previous post that you can skip over all the verbage in the Florida planting guide. Go right to the charts - they tell the what & when.

Tampa is a great place to be, I have family on the gulf, close to Tampa.
Buying ingredients for your Mel's Mix is better done by phone, to make sure your merchants carry the ingredeints and to check out prices before you go. There is nothing so stressful as driving from place to place and ending up dissapointed.
Call nurseries, big box stores such as Lowes or Home Depot, even Wal-Mart.
Some Lowes (not sure about in FL) carry premixed Mel's Mix.
To find vermiculite, check our data base, and if you find a new merchant, be sure to list it for the next person who is searching. Look for merchants using the US DB button, add merchants on the US FORM button.
VERMICULITE
Again, Welcome and most of all, Enjoy!

Looks great!
I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
