Feeling frustrated. I just went out to find another worm to see if I could get better pictures. Well, I found two more, each a different kind. I couldn't find one of them when I came back with the camera, but here's the other one:

Looks like the wireworm you were talking about, or maybe just a regular old meal worm.

So it looks like I've got some crap (pardon the pun) compost. I'm so mad, because I paid $50 for it, thinking this was going to be premium stuff you couldn't get at the big boxes. I don't think this guy will take a return...

What do I do? No

The wire worms are everywhere around here. I just stomp em when I find them, which is pertty much anytime I'm digging in the soil. The birds love to eat them.

Or maybe I didn't look closely enough, and the original one was just a smaller version of this one. But the one I didn't get a picture of was dark grey. So I don't know what all I have in there. I'm mad, because I've already mixed a bunch of my lovely things with this stuff, and it's sitting in my box, ready to go.

Please talk me down off my ledge (not literally obviously). I'm feeling really frustrated right now. I've tried so hard to give this a perfect start, obsessing over if for weeks now, and this is feeling like a really big deal right now.

http://bugguide.net/node/view/37 If the other critter was grey and had a bazillion legs well, most millipedes eat dead stuff in the dirt and will not be much of a problem, but the wire worm will eat live roots.
Bugs are everywhere and to some extent are a gardeners friend. My suggestion, don't sweat it, but do take some time to educate yourself as to what lives in your yard and then how to address them if they are a problem. Some bug you may find you want to attract.

Your garden will be fine, now come down from there! I love you

Don't worry about it. Your crap "crap" will be wonderful stuff once it is done composting. It may be most of the way there. Like I said, I had LOTS of bugs in the truck load of compost I got from my local transfer station. It was probably only 80% finished as opposed to the 100% they promised me. Still, my plants are doing just fine. Nothing has died or gotten burn or been eaten up.

Plant something in that box and see how it goes. If that plant survives you know you are ok to mix the rest of your MM.

Looks like you have a plan!! Save them in a little container with dirt and you can go once you have a few veggies ready to eat. Fresh veggies and fish, you've got your self the best meal!

Thanks for the help folks. I've backed away from the edge. So, if you'll indulge me, I want to recap to make sure I've got the game plan down:

Plant my broccoli seedlings that are about to bust out of their containers. See if they die from my nasty infestation. If so, cry, pick bugs out one by one, and dump the rest of my crappy crap somewhere other than my garden. If NOT, pick out nasties if I happen to come across them, but don't go crazy. Mix the remaining stuff and let the birdies have at the wormies for a while before I plant more. Then plant (last frost date is the 15th - can I know by then that we have a green light?). Cover box with wildlife netting, because the birds are no longer welcome.

Will that work? I can't tell you all how thankful I am to have you in my back pocket. And who knows, I may become a fisher... Smile Actually, only one major project at a time, please!

Thank you Elliephant. That's pretty much exactly what I needed.

Thanks everyone else too. What a great group therapy session.
