Our gardening experience is extremely limited. I've grown tomatoes fairly successfully in the past in pots and in the ground. Hadn't tried them in this house until last summer. Tried tomatoes & peppers - big flop. Got three tomatoes & a handful of miniature peppers. The tag didn't indicate miniature. Not sure if I got the wrong plants or if it was because I had a baby in July and they were pretty much on their own. Anyway, my husband is somewhat on board this year and we're going to try SFG. Planning to put in four 4x4 squares this weekend. Trying to find coarse vermiculate. The database for our area only shows Menards.com, but I couldn't find any vermiculite on Menard's website. They have the insulation kind, but nothing in gardening.
I'm a bit worried that we're starting out too late for the spring season. Any thoughts? I also haven't figured out how to connect with others in our area through these forums. I'm sure that would be helpful. If we get the beds set up and filled tomorrow. What could we plant in the next week?

TIA!

Hey there! Welcome aboard. There are lots of places to poke around here once you get acquainted. And, nearly all of them will pull fellow Hoosiers out of the woodwork to greet you.

I would start back on the forum's start page, scroll down to the Regional Forums and peek into the Northern and Central Midwest. Indiana is in that region. I know there are others in there. If you ever need to get in touch with someone, individually, you can just click their name, click contact, and click PM. It will send a message only to them for you....like email. They can likely help you find your vermiculite around Indy.

You aren't too late to plant for spring at all. You may be limited in what you can start from seeds, but you should still have a fabulous spring harvest. The Indianapolis area's frost date, to my knowledge, is around the 21st of April. You are two weeks away. So, I would start putting lettuces, carrots, peas, spinaches in the ground right now directly from seed. However, if you wanted to do some of the slower to mature plants like broccoli and cauliflower, I would buy transplants and put them in the ground as soon as I got home, provided the SFG is built.

Don't be afraid to ask anything about spring vegetables here, we are an eager bunch to help. We love to see pictures of what you are doing, too. And, pictures also help in answering questions because we can see things, too.

If you haven't picked up a copy of Mel's book, All New SFG, do so next time you are in the stores....or check it out from the library. That baby is full of tables and charts telling you when to plant and whether to do so from seed or transplants. It's an incredible source......almost as good as this forum (wink wink).

Hope to see you around soon!

Glad to have ya.

+1 to everything BBG just said. You aren't too late for spring. You can get in contact with others anywhere in the forums, but especially in the Midwest regional forums (you have an excellent RH by the way).

As to the vermiculite at Menards, I believe it is the insulation varitey that folks are buying. It's safe so long as there aren't any additives. I believe it's supposed to be around $10 a bag. That is a steal!

Make sure to pick up the All New SFG, and don't hesitate to post any questions you might have. We are all eager to help if we can. Smile

Take care and happy gardening!

Thank you! Thank you! Found my regional forum (should have thought of scrolling down!) and found some vermiculite. Ended up getting some stuff actually labeled "coarse" from Tiffanys. They were on the spreadsheet too and actually had a location that wasn't too far away. The stuff at Menard's is a better deal ($13/3 cu ft bag locally), but decided to go with the stuff labeled "coarse" in case it was any better. It was $22/4 cu ft bag, so only $14 more for our four squares.

Got the book on Wednesday. I'm halfway through it. You're absolutely right, tons of great info!

Thanks so much for the welcome and quick, helpful answers to my questions!

I'm in Lafayette, so not too far away. Yes, the vermiculite from menards is in the insulation dept., but it's perfectly safe. We got ours there, and this year it's around $12/bag, so quite reasonable compared to the prices others have paid.

We haven't gotten our boxes filled, either, so you still have time. We plan to get that done and some seeds planted this weekend.

What part of Indy are you from? I'm originally from Columbus, and my husband is from southern IN.

Good luck getting things started this year!

We're on the NE side of Indy in Fishers. Moved here five years ago from Lafayette. Liked that area a lot and still have lots of friends there.

Good luck with your garden this weekend. Our weather has cleared up and is nice & sunny this afternoon. Yay!
