Just wondering what experienced Davis County, UT gardeners have planted already. My neighbors tell me it is too early, but I was at a local nursery and a group of us looking at seeds started talking and many have already planted a number of cool crop vegetables.

Got my boxes done and began filling with mix on Friday. It took longer than expected to get the boxes filled. Will add my grids tomorrow. Anxious to get started.

i'm zone 5b. i have peas, spinach, garlic, carrots, arugula, kale, swiss chard, brussel sprouts all in ground and thriving.

the spinach i discovered can survive winter w/o protection - we've been harvesting from it about 2-3 times week - enough for a salad for 3 people (one of my kids likes salad and the other two just nibble on a leaf or two).

i have swiss chard and brussel sprouts under mini greenhouses to protect them while they're sprouting - that's just a gallon milk jug i cut the bottom off. lid off to vent during day.

we love sfg!

I have transplanted my brocolli, onions, and shallots. I've also planted two types of spinach, bibb lettuce, carrots, and garlic. Nothing's died yet Smile Can't wait for the end of April!

(Putting on second set of leaves)
TOMATOES: Orange banana, Opalka, German pink, homestead, grape, Jerry's German Giant, family heirloom which is a very large smooth (not beefsteak type) pineapple/Mr. Stripey type), Isis Candy, Early cascade (which I love for canning - they are large, great flavor, grow in clusters, ripen at one time).

PEPPERS: Ancho, pepperoncini, Jalapeno, Early Jalapeno (which may be the same as Jalapeno, don't know), Tam Jalapeno (not as hot), cascabella, serrano, big dipper,

ONIONS: Bianca Di Maggio, Red creole & leek - have had their second "haircut"

CABBAGE: Red acre, late flat dutch, Ferry's round dutch, Canton Bok Pak Choy.

LETTUCE: ready to transplant whenever I get my first bed finished, but are in a large rectangular flower box with plenty of room to grow: Gourmet mix, Cimmaron red Romaine, Parris island Cos romaine, Burpee red & green romaine blend, Burpee looseleaf blend,

Just started a few seeds indoors yesterday: Teton hybrid spinach, yellow straight neck squash, Marketmore cuke, Boston Pickling cuke, Italian giant parsley

I've got spring fever really bad. I just need to remember I have a good paying job that I need to be doing instead of switching from one computer to another! see you later.

What have you planted? Empty Planting in Utah

Post  MSJ 4/4/2011, 12:02 am

Can you believe the snow? We got 6 inches here today. The snow on the roads and sidewalks has melted but the yard is still inches deep. I'm glad to know I am not the only one who hasn't already planted my early crops.

Did you buy Mel's Mix prepared or do it yourself? I have heard that you can get it at IFA but I'm not sure of the cost. Also, how much did it take to fill a 4x4 box?

Good luck getting your garden planted. I hope the weather cooperates.
