Has anyone looked into the Marvin's Orgainc Zoo Doo? I was wondering since it comes from only the herbavores if this would be good enough for MM or if I still need to find four other types of compost. I am prepared to go get my load of Zoo Doo but wanted to ask so i don't get a, dare i say it, crap load more then i need.

thoughts?

I think according to Mel's "recipe" that it would only count as one. Hopefully an excellent and nutrient rich one though. But I guess the 5 should be sources, not ingredients. (I do plan on getting my self some when I go up as well!)

Zoo doo is great stuff. Unfortunately, you don't know for certain the contents. It will have various manures from omnivores, along with bedding like straw and wood chips. Percentages will be unknown. For myself, I would consider it one compost. If I got in a bind finding more, I could see calling it two.

That's just me. If five composts are good, then 6, 7, or 8 are even better!

Thanks everyone. Looks like I buy a small bit of zoo doo and carry on from there.

reading through some of there blog posts it also appears that they receive a large amount of produce waste from wal-mart as well.

I would count it as 2. The zoo has so many different families of herbivores that you are going to get quite a combination. I can't wait to get some! Did you see that several of us are going to meet there on April 23rd? I want some as my supplement this year. 🐘 🐘 🐘

(And p.s. - I can't wait to see the new baby giraffe!! Have you seen any of her pictures?)

Wolfheart, I contacted Marvin's Organic Gardens to get more information regarding the contents, and here is the response:

"plant based food waste, manure from over 3 dozen vegetarian animal species, yard waste such as leaves and chips, and a small amount of local 'Excellent' rated topsoil"

I will not debate whether or not this should count as 1, 2, 3, or more composts, but wanted to pass this on to you. Happy Gardening!

Has anyone in the Cincinnati-area had any luck finding COARSE vermiculite. I checked the sites on the database and they either have no vermiculite or only medium/fine vermiculite. Thanks much!

I am in NKY and I get my vermiculite at Worm's Way in Erlanger. It depends on the shipment what they have, just give them a ring via a google search...

When I went there, their bags were unmarked as to grade, but they were in plastic instead of the paper I got at Eds. When I got it home and opened it, it was course.

Eureka!!!!! I stumbled across an article about hydroponic gardening which mentioned vermiculite. A-ha!! A very quick search of hydroponic stores turned up a veritable treasure-trove of COARSE vermiculite in the Cincinnati (north) area at a relatively reasonable price of $24.95 for 4 cf bags.

Dayton Hydroponics (two locations which I have added to the Vermiculite Database):

I am on my way now to pick up 5 bags!

I think I'm reading the bag correctly: it comes from the company of forum member, PVPind

Neato! I like supporting people I 'know'. It's too bad he doesn't sell retail.

That is the only brand I've seen in Cincy so far, except for the insulation at Menards.

that's funny you mentioned Dayton Hydroponics. I'm going there in a few weeks to get some supplies for my son's summer project. He wants to grow a Lumina pumpkin.

Boffer - Yes, this is PVPind's product! I've been so frustrated trying to find coarse vermiculite here in Cincinnati, that my next step was going to be to PM him directly to find out who carries his brand here - Sigh! I can't tell you how many times I've called ahead to stores check on availability only to get there and find that they really only had medium or fine vermiculite, or only had perlite in stock.
idk

To Cincinnatians - I went to the store located in Springdale (from I275 take 747 north and turn right at the Speedway, it's on the left in building with green awning), and they were SUPER helpful! They've only been in the Cincinnati area for two weeks and they don't have their signage yet, but it is a great little store with lots of stuff that SFG'ers would love: worm castings, bat guano (from different countries!), peat moss, coir, netting for trellises, heating pads for starters, etc. I worked mostly with Alan and we had a great conversation about SFG. I told him that if he gets the out word about his store, in addition to his hydroponic customers, he would probably have loyal SFG customers for life!

Kim, good luck to your son with his pumpkin!

Good morning, my Cincinnati friends! I got a postcard this week about the Hamilton County compost bin sale. They are also selling rainbarrels this year. The compost bin is not an Earth machine, but it looks very similar to what I bought a few years ago. There are 2 locations for the sale. Here is a link with info about the sale.

Nancy, thanks for sharing this info. I would love to pick up a compost bin, but it looks like the sale is for Hamilton County residents only. I'll check here in Warren County though to see if they'll be holding something similar for us.

edited to add: I can't find the info. I'll get ahold of my mom and see what the dates are , or was.

Thanks for posting that Nancy, I missed it last year! I already have 4 rain barrels but I could always use another compost bin, right?

And Renee- that place is really close to my house, I didn't even know they were there! Heck, I drove out to Symmes Twp for my first 2 bags!
