Re: Containers and Pots
For those interested in low cost grow bags, go to youtube and look at how super easy they are to make - and CHEAP!
Here is a link for the self watering system we're basing ours off of... We're kind of combining his system with Mel's for the inside winter garden

I'm not at all up and running, but I will be doing the "modified SFG" in containers indoors this winter. I know, I'm plumb off my rocker aren't I!!??
I'll be watching this thread closely since I'm doing containers also (grow bags) and can use all the info possible... Happy gardening all!

Re: Containers and Pots
Don't get discouraged if your first efforts don't turn out well. There's something about micro organisms that need time to develop. "New" dirt from the store is pretty much sterile and doesn't do nearly as well as next year's mix will with homemade compost in it, loaded with microbes.saganco wrote:

I am NOT an expert on this subject, but there are a few running around here who are sure to stop in and explain it all to you. All I know is that every one of my 2nd year crops -- whether in containers or beds -- did much better than my first year efforts, when all of my planting medium was new from the store.
Re: Containers and Pots
Suz, I won't be having store compost as we just bought the Jora JK125 double barrel tumbling composter. Since I've seen it called the "Cadillac Composter" - I'm going to name it "Caddi" and lovingly take care of what's in it so it can take care of us! I will also be adding rock dust (Azomite) into the composter to give it some of the good stuff for a nice hot (hopefully) cooking session. I just hope I don't goof this whole first batch up since I am waiting on that compost to be done before mixing my MM (which I will also do in the composter - just tumbling it to mix it all good). Easier on my back than the tarp method. I just hope it all works. With all the great info here and the experienced gardeners, seems unlikely to have a total disaster, right!?

Sounds good to me. No, it should not be a "total disaster." Good luck.saganco wrote:Suz, I won't be having store compost as we just bought the Jora JK125 double barrel tumbling composter. So? How's it going?saganco wrote:Thanks for the encouragement Suz - I sure HOPE it won't be a disaster! I'm looking forward to getting started with all this very soon!!
Re: Containers and Pots
Well..... My Jora JK125 composter was cooking great for about 16 days, then it died. Temps of 60-80, and I can't seem to fire it up again. I am afraid that I have to more or less start over with it. That's my hold up - the other components of the MM is not the issue, it's getting my compost finished. See my post https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t21960-new-composter-need-help-filling-correctly?highlight=new+composter - if you want to see how it's NOT going.
