Double-deep boxes for carrots? Empty Double-deep boxes for carrots?

If I am using double deep boxes for a row of carrots (4 squares across)--I am going to have DH build a top-hat I think it's called. Do I fill the whole 12" deep all the way across with Mel's mix?

Yes, you want the friable Mel's Mix all the way down in those 12 inch deep boxes. Carrots really need loose soil, without rocks, twigs and stuff, or you won't get those pretty straight roots.

Some varieties of carrots acutally grow up to 14 inches long, so check your seed packs and make sure the varieties you are planting will be in the 8 - 12 inch range. If your variety is a short carrot, 6 inches or less, no need for a top hat. But you could still use that deep soil for potatoes.

You could. Or realize that store's generally sell Imperator type carrots, and that all carrots aren't that long. This is a Nantes type, grown in six inche of MM. It appears that it had no intention of slowing down when it hit bottom!

Thanks, Lizzo. That photo explains everything.

I did buy some "Deep Purple" carrot seeds that are supposed to grow 12 - 14 inches. My "White Satin" carrot seeds says 8 inches and Atomic Red 9 inches.

You're welcome. Just like Mel said, high rises are a possibility, but carrots will adapt to their environment, not to worry.
