Jenny - my newest "favorite thing" is the solor panels over the parking lot. Seems so brilliant to me! Glad you love our zoo. I'm pretty partial to it, too.

dmsandlin - the circus was just here a month ago. What a great idea! I'll have to remember this for next year. Thanks!

No Worries GG, I just didn't want you to pay for a Cu Yard and only get 4 buckets worth. Smile

Nonna.PapaVino wrote:Our beautiful Portland zoo also composts its poo. Because there is a large elephant population in this zoo, there's quite a bit of zoodoo. Unfortunately, not much is made available to the public. As it says in their website: "We have built an onsite manure-composting system to turn 100 percent of our herbivore manure into useable compost. The two 1,600-square-foot covered areas have been subdivided into four mini-bays, three of which have a new trench-style design and a forced-airflow system to maintain an EPA-standard composting environment. This product is not certified organic.
The finished product, ZooDoo, is used as fertilizer by zoo horticulture staff. The remainder is shared with neighboring agencies, such as Hoyt Arboretum Washington Park.

Sigh, so no elephant doo for my elephant garlic.

Went to the zoo,
called them too.
They no longer offer Zoo-Doo.

I think you got ripped off personally. 1 cu. yard of compost is also translated into roughly 7-8 32 gallon (standard outdoor trash/yard waste can) garbage cans. 4 "buckets" might be a cubic foot or so and $30 for that is A LOT... 1-1.5 cu ft is a small/standard bag of your run of the mill compost at the big box store or nursery and that can vary in price from $1-10 usually perhaps up to 15 but $30?? wowzers! We got 1/2 cu yard of compost (4 garbage bins) at our local trash recycling center for less than $4.
