so we finally got the boxes all done and mixed and filled and put them in their right places. I ended up with a 4x4 on a table. and 3- 2x4's (one is 12 inches deep)- and like 8 pots

I planted a lot today-- some parsley, 1 strawberry plant, broccoli and cabbage starts, potatoes, onions, kale, collards, spinach, lettuce.............I was pleased.

OF COURSE!!!! after a nice hot yesterday and a nice afternoon--TONIGHT the wind is REALLY really bad and it is cold--sprinkling rain and maybe snow?!! we put the N-Sulate (thin fabric) over the boxes with rocks and hope they will not blow away within the hour but I'm wondering with all the wind chill they will do anything. is there anything else I can do for my poor plants and seedlings?!! will they all be dead after this cold spell. will hard wind ruin a plant? the broccoli start is practically horizontal with the ground now--poor guy Wink

Hi,
On your list of plants the only one I think is questionable are the potato starts, a good frost could nip it and stunt growth. If you are really worried you can make a cloche or mini green house. Take a 2L soda bottle and cut off the bottom, put over your plant. Any leaves that come in contact with the plastic will wilt, however most of the rest of the plant will be just fine. Do not forget to remove the cloche when the weather improves or you will cook your plant very quickly. I have not grown broccoli or cabbage, I have grown spinach, strawberries, and onions, they got snowed on and were just fine. I would guess your crops will be just fine.

Where I am we get a good bit of wind. The only damage I've seen is a snapped leaf here or there. I think the material you are using for row cover will help with the cold, but as patty said, you've planted mostly cold weather crops. They will be fine.

Windchill is a term designed almost specifically for humans. It is the supposed temperature felt on exposed skin.....or maybe dog's nose. Plants don't feel windchill. Yours should be fine concerning high winds and chilly nights.

And, here's an even better explanation regarding moisture loss in plants regarding wind. But, again, nothing to panic about since the duration of your winds is likely very short-termed and you are a gardener.......it's ingrained in you to keep your plants moist....Wink
