Newbie in Pittsburgh!!

Hello!! I am new to this forum. I started gardening last year. Did a modified SFG. Just had the frame built by my wonerful DH!! Going to do the grid this year, it was difficult last year to plant w/o it! Also hoping to do some vertical growing this year!

I couldn't agree more with it being difficult to plant without the grid! LOL. Last year, I put the grid in AFTER I strung seed tapes out....in rows. What a mess! But, we'll get it right this season.....welcome aboard!

Lots of great people here, and lots of great pictures to help describe things....or just show stuff off! Once you get comfortable, jump in with both feet and get involved. The people here are so friendly and fun. I hope you'll love it.

Have you done more traditional gardening in the past? How did you get turned on to SFG? My grandfather had a garden way back in the mid 80s, but I had to grow up a bit before buying a house and "ripening" to a point I wanted my own garden.

Did you find us from the book? Or, a google search? I am curious because I like to know where people are coming from when they ask questions. The conversion from traditional gardening to SFG is sometimes what leads to .....MMM.....Modified Mel's Mix. I did it, too, last year. I gotta admit, though, I'm glad I stuck to the book this year so far.

Last year was my first year gardening. My DH made a raised 4X8 box for me. I had tomatos, corn, cucumbers, zucchini, some flowers, carrots and pumpkins. I had some success and some major failure. I had never gardened much before, but my parents have always had a garden. They just do rows and it works well for them. I had seen the SFG show on tv as a kid and remembered it. Then I picked up the book this past fall. I'm really looking forward to utilizing Mel's ideas, especially MMM!!!
Plus this is a hobby for my daughter and I. She is only 5 and it's a great time to let her help and let her see how things grow and how we have to take care of things.

You'll find lots of help here when you have questions.
I'm sure you and your daughter will enjoy gardening together.
Make sure she starts some of her own quick-growers, like radishes, so she can see early results. That always pleases the children.

We are very glad you came to join us. This is a great group of people who are willing to help when you have questions. You are going to love Mel's Mix. It will make gardening much easier for you and your daughter. She is big enough to plant her own squares. Mel's spacing is also great, because you get so much more in a square than you would expect.
