Question about the Gardner's Supply Planner and Mel's SQF
I am getting excited about planting this year and have a quick question. In messing around with the Gardner's Supply Planner it says to plant 16 leaf lettuce plants in a square foot but Mel's book says only four per square foot. What do others do?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Hi EBE, I just took a look at that software you use and if you scroll the plants along a bit you will see the lettuce that Mel refers to and only four are shown per square. Good luck

Re: Garden planning software
EBE, if you plant leaf lettuce for cut and come again harvesting, meaning you cut the outer leaves as they grow big enough to eat, they can be grown 9 to 16 per square. Because I harvest leaf by leaf while the leaves are young, I plant them about 3 inches apart.
Head lettuce or leaf lettuce that you would grow to full size before harvesting will require more room. Your package will say thin to 6 or 8 inches. In this case you will need to plant 4 or less per square.

Good Apps/Garden planning software
Hi All,
I'm wondering if anybody has come across any good gardening apps on the android market? I recently downloaded Gardenate which seems to be decent, it gives lots of info on each vegetable including planting times and regional info. and I also downloaded Garden squared which is an app that helps organize your SFG boxes my letting you map them out. There is one downfall that I've come across with that one in my limited use: it only lets you go up to a 4x4 box I believe.
Also, I've been trying to find a nice free program or website to design your garden online and haven't really come across anything great and free yet.
Thanks guys and girls

Re: Garden planning software
Agree with the void in the Android market. I tried Garden Squared last year but it just seemed cumbersome and didn't have a lot of even common veggies so I was forever having to use the little circled grids for different things (high, medium and low density planting). I think the bed size on mine goes up to 4 x 8. I haven't really explored since last year, though, so maybe someone will know of something.

Try out this one: http://www.sfgplanner.com
It is a Web app for online SFG garden planning, and it is totally free.
It has pretty large plant catalog and also displays harvest timeline.
Happy gardening!

Re: Garden planning software
There's a dearth of planning apps in the Apple App Store too, if it makes you feel any better.
I tried various apps and websites and notebooks and planners and finally gave up and keep it all in Google docs in a spreadsheet with different tabs. At least I can access it from any of my devices in any location!
You can see it at this link. Maybe it'll be helpful.

Re: Garden planning software
I don't know any, but will tag along for information. I'm such a newbie!
My solution probably won't work for most since you wouldn't have access to the program, but since I am a professional artist and graphic artist, I created a grid map in Photoshop with each of my 4 garden planters. Photoshop will lay out a square foot grid so I can easily work with it to create a plan.
I created text layer tags for each veggie/# in a square and am dragging and dropping them on the space. Once finished I've saved it as a layer with the date planted. That way I can save from season to season and see where I planted what.
I still have so much to learn about crop rotation and placement though. As I discover things I can actually create another layer with the information typed on it so it's all in one easy to access place.

Re: Garden planning software
This is an old thread, but I thought I'd pop in to give my 2 cents. I've been using it to plan my SFG and LOVE it! They just added a lot of new features for 2013 too. It's very easy (and fun!) to use, and when I contacted their CS, they got back to me very quickly. And, c'mon, there's an SFG button right there so it properly calculates how many plants can fit. Love it! Especially since this is my first year doing SFG.
