shade crops?! Empty shade crops?!

Post  Lollypop9 3/27/2011, 10:28 pm

does anything grow in mostly shade and indirect light?! (haha I thought I would ask)- mymom gave me and extra box with mel'smix soil and everything and we are renting and have little space so I think I'll put in on my front porch--I hate to just have it sit and not grow anything this year--if there's nothing--maybe I'll just cover our whole back porch (then the kids won't have anywhere to play)

I was thinking I could do potatoes--since some people grown them in dark garbage cans in their basement--thoughts?! but then the guy at the garden store said they need FULL sun.

You could grow flowers and feed your soul. It would give you a chance to learn some gardening and perhaps your next home will have more sun. Enjoy your gift.

Absolutely!! We don't have to grow veggies 100% of the time in an SFG. That's the beauty of it. It's perfectly conditioned dirt for you to grow what you choose. If I could stick my kids in it sometimes to get them to grow a little more, I would.

Great shade plants are Impatiens! Hostas, ferns, caladiums, elephant ears, etc. Search around for "shade loving plants and flowers" and you will get some great photos of what people have done (I'm sorry if you are thinking SFG people. I haven't seen a lot of shade gardening done here....yet, but I will in time I'm sure). And, with an SFG, your spacing is set AND you maximize your bloom with minimal care. Win-win!!

Check out www.springhillnurseries.com and www.michiganbulbs.com . Both companies offer shad/part shade plants and more important ideas if you don't want to order something online.

Burpee also lists a lot of annuals.
