I know there are a bunch of us Floridian's here on the forums... so where are all of you hiding?

This is my first year doing the SFG method... so, I'm hoping I can learn from some of you tried-and-tested folk in my state. Wink

Yeah, I mentioned something about that in one of the other forums. Florida is another one of those tricky places... none of us are too far away from the coast, but some of us are on the peninsula and are affected by the sea breezes. Where I'm at, we tend to get pummeled in the mid to late afternoon by those clouds building high up into the atmosphere.

I'm northern coastal, so I dont know where that falls in but we joke that we're really South Georgia, North Florida is a whole different animal.

Yeah, just like the panhandle often calls itself "L.A." - Lower Alabama. lol!

Our summer weather in Central Florida is really dependant upon the collision of the sea breezes. We've had a frigid few months, though likely considered "nice" by some of our Yankee friends.

My allergies are in full "bloom" now... Orange blossoms are on the trees in the back yard.. can't wait for that to end!

I used to get a kick out of the tourists complaining about it raining everyday of their summer vacation to Disney and Universal... it's SUPPOSED to rain everyday here that time of the year! If it doesn't, we call it a drought!

yeh, same here...I should have started my seeds about 3 weeks before I did.
it's strange getting used to planting 2x instead of just once in the spring and then harvest in the fall.

Tell me about it! I was afraid to plant with the wacky weather we've been having... one day in the 70's, 30's the next... I call it "Yo-Yo Weather."

So, now that it hasn't gotten below freezing in a little while, I finally started to get stuff 'in the ground' (or raised beds, to be more precise.) But, by the same token, I have two bunches of lettuce that started growing out of the blue... about where I had seeded them last year.

So, my first SFG is underway... planted the rest of the 'maters and some seeds (beans, cucumbers, and more lettuce [why not?])... be fun to see how things work out.

don't feel bad, guys -- my mom's garden (she's still planting rows in the ground) in Hillsborough Co. has gone belly-up -- she covered the strawberries and tomatoes, but they froze anyway...

I think in a *normal* weather year, you'd be safe starting seeds right in your SFG box in central FL -- there's usually that cold snap in early Feb that makes a frost (usually the night before the Gasparilla parade LOL!), and torrential rains during the State Fair, but other than that, I'm pretty sure the boxes would be plenty warm enough to just sow directly. Not authority, btw, just my thinkin' out loud.

(we've finally gotten spring over here in Europe -- 60s during the day!)

Certains seeds yes are direct sow (carrots radish's beans peas etc.) because they are hard to transplant my tomatoes peppers and others i start indoors in growing trays then pot them up to peat pots until they are strong enough to be transplanted into the garden im slowly with trial and error make a list of what to direst sow and what to start indoors its a long process thank god there soo many seeds in a packet lol

I read this on gardenweb...
"I'm looking at the 10 day forecast, the
last frost date probabilities, The Farmers Almanac, a Ouija board,
Tarot cards and a crystal ball, trying to decide when to set out my
tomatoes, squash, cukes, eggplants and peppers. Next week starting
monday looks promising. 70s daytime 50s night. Of course that can
change. I'm looking for advice from you experienced gardeners in this
area."

"Winter is over when the Canadians slam their trunk lids and rush onto I95, heading home. Spring
begins when the weatherman (that idiot that continues to call
everything "tiny little" or "little tiny") starts complaining about the
heat index because it makes his hairpiece slip."

"If the coleslaw wrestling is over, and the band's not playing "Born to be Wild", start planting."

Paging Florida SFG'ers... Icon_lol Funny but it's true thats just about the right time, now I'll have to learn to start my seeds 4-6weeks before that.

I'm in SOFLO. Been here so long I didn't know that there was any place else. I've got my first SFG going. Started it back in Nov. Things seem to progress at a slow rate. Or maybe I am just thinking it should be faster. That is probably the likely scenario. I have gotten 2 heads of cabbage and 3 tomatoes from them to date. I've started peas, eggplant, jalepeno peppers, and leaf lettuce. We will see how it all goes.
As a side note, has anyone found vermiculite in lager quantities in the SOFLO area?

South Florida as in ? you might also wan to check the vermiculite forum to see whats in there i found my vermiculite at a local nursery/Landscape supply store some feed stores carry it as well some people have said they found it at the big box stores but in the insulation dept. rather then the gardening dept. might take some time to find a source near you but its out there make sure if you do find it to post it up in the vermivculite forum for others in your area to locate and use.

Garden looks like its off to an awesome start im still working on getting my indoor seed starting times down its a bit diffrent here then it was in NJ and this is only my 2nd season throwing my hand at gardening down here first season was alot of trial and error.

I updated my my showcase of gardens post with some nice discoveries i had today
https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/showcase-of-gardens-f6/my-garden-pictures-t269.htm
good luck with your search for vermiculite and your garden look forward to following your success
