Planting times in NJ? Empty Planting times in NJ?

Post  Dunkinjean 3/23/2011, 10:23 pm

Hi everyone!

This is only the beginning of my 2nd yr of SFG. Last yr I only had one box, this year hubby & I added two more.

I have looked at several planting calendars online.
One of them is Burpee, My Square Foot Garden and gardenate.com.

They all suggest different planting times for my location - crazy!

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

I plant outdoors after mothers day around May 8th. I called the Rutgers coop & they said May 14 is the last frost. You can always call Rutgers coop their # is in your phone book under Gov't agencies. Good Luck!

Yes, I plant mother's day most vegetables - beans, tom, peppers, etc.

I am more confused on when to plant the early veg's (sorry, I should have been more explicit) -
peas, lettuce, carrots.

Thank you for your assistance. bounce

P.S. Rutgers Univ., Cook Campus has AG DAY the end of April which I am going to attend and purchase my Rutgers Tom along with 3 other types grown in NJ along with a few pepper plants.

Can you get your trowel in the MM? Plant 'em!

You won't know when the right time to plant them is until it's too late! Some years you'll have decent weather and you'll be eating fresh veggies way before your neighbors. If the weather turns crummy, you might have to replant...nothing lost but a few seeds.

Peas, lettuce, and carrots can take the cold abuse. It just slows them down.

Yeah just do it Jean! I know you are a touch colder than I am but I planted peas March 1st and they are already poking up through the soil. I've got lettuce & spinach growing in my table tops but they are covered with cloth & plastic right now. I can post pics later (dont have them on me here at work).

I use April 24th as my last frost date, its a little early by burpee's calcualtions, but I'm willing to cover up on the sporadic cold/frosty nights.

The Peas were planted yesterday - I took a chance!

I watered them and covered them with weed blocker to keep them warm.

Same for today.

Next weekend I will plant lettuce, carrots and radishes.

Going to grow potatoes for the 1st time and I am very excited!

Come on....Planting times in NJ? 274447
