Vermiculite wow is it pricey!
So I tracked down vermiculite at the local co-op. I paid 27.50 for each 4 cubic bag. How does that compare with everyone else's prices?

Re: Vermiculite wow is it pricey!
Yikes... If the price holds out, I am hoping to be paying $19 a bag.
Re: Vermiculite wow is it pricey!
Don't forget, it's a one time expenditure. It's pretty cheap when spread out over years.
I pay $7-10 a cubic foot, depending on the source. There seems to be lots of folks back east who are paying around $3.50-4.00 a cubic foot.
Remember, vermiculite is sold in different size bags. Don't just post how much a bag costs; we need to know the size of the bag as well.

One local source is $25, the other is $30, so you're right in the middle.

Re: Vermiculite wow is it pricey!
I pay $26 for the 3 cu ft bags because that's all they sell around here that I've found.
Boffer is right. It bites you in the bum, but it's a one-time expense. Averaged out over 10 years, my MM costs me $20 annually. I think I can swallow that one....one tomato at a time.
edit: I looked into it.....Lowe's won't let me pay over 10 years, though.

Howdy CLB58:
Make sure you check the Vermiculite Database on this forum. The entries are listed by state so go down the list to you reach your state and you may find vermiculite near you that is less expensive or you may find that what you paid was the norm for your area. In looking at the database I have found vermiculite in the 4 cu ft bags ranging from $16,00 to $35.00 or more. So give it a look. BTW: If your source is not listed please add it to the database as a help to someone else.
God Bless, Ward and Mary.

I just paid $29/4cu bag plus shipping for 2 bags, but since I won't have to do it again, definitely worth it.
PS - I get my peat at the end of the season when our local retailers put it at 50% or more off, stock it up for the next year.

Re: Vermiculite wow is it pricey!
I paid $17.99 for the last bag yesterday at a nursery yesterday. Was just cruising up hiway 17 on my way home and saw a nursery that looked good. pulled in and low and behold they had ONE bag of vermiculite. 4 cu ft. Don't even know exactly where i was so I can list on the database, but it was Pender Pines Garden Center somewhere Hampstead and Holly Ridge NC right on hiway 17

Check the vermeculite database, and call Deerfield Greenhouse Supplies in KY. Ask for a catalog (they are not online) I picked up 4 cu ft. bags for 12.99 + tax. I believe they have shipping available.
They have lots of other hard to find items, I picked up agribond row cover among other things.

I paid 26.99 for 4 cu ft bag a few weeks ago. I was surprised how much it was. Glad it is only a one time expense.

I've called around here (Maryland) and have found it as low as $18 for a 4 cf bag up to $35.
