Need advice on thermometers Empty Need advice on thermometers

I was wondering if any of you have any thermometer advice for me. I am going to put a cold frame on top of one of my raised beds so I can start moving some of my seedlings out. I need to know what the high/low temps are inside and outside the cold frame. I would like a thermometer with a wireless sensor and a memory for min/max that I can put in my cold frame and with a sensor outside so I know what the temp differential is between the two. Any suggestions? I don't want to spend a lot of money but I don't want to waste money buying a poorly functional product.

Thanks!

That's going to be a difficult task, if I can be really frank. Today, you really get what you pay for in indoor/outdoor therms. Investing in a weather system with expandable wireless sensor units would be your best bet, but wow are they pricey. OregonScientific is about the most reasonable I've seen from a company.

If you want to go the cheaper route, WallyWorld has some for around 10 bucks that will get the job done for awhile. But, your battery life will be pretty short, and they seem to get flukey after awhile, too.....the wireless ones. I had a wired sensor that lasted for a long time, but that was 10 years ago.

Your major issue, imo, will be finding the right model. Most with wired sensors have an "indoor" thermometer attached to an "outdoor" thermometer....and they don't wirelessly report to a base system. However, the 2nd problem is the "indoor" thermometers only go down to 32F. They simply don't have the range of accuracy the "outdoor" thermometers do.

I think your simple answer would be to put two wireless devices out by your cold frame....one inside and one outside. Have them both report back to a base system inside your house. The problem, again, comes back to price, though.

I wish you luck. I haven't ever found anything I am satisfied with, either.
