Hello from Central Texas
My name is William. I'm a square footer from McDade, just east of Austin, Tx. I do Permaculture design, mud buildings, and Native American style flutes. I bought Mel's SFG book back in 1981. It's the only way I want to garden. Pleased to meet you all.

Happy to meet you too. What a great variety of interests you have.
What took you so long to find us? We enjoy having new members with SFG experience. It helps round out the group. There are several forum members who live in different parts of that huge state you call home.
We hope you will share the progress of your SFG, and post pictures when you can. We

Again, Welcome.

Welcome William,
I hope you will be sharing photos of your garden with us.
I'm in a totally other growing zone so I love seeing pictures of southern gardens so I can dream of my own looking like that soon.
Good luck.

Welcome! Someone recently mentioned a tomato-tasting festival of some sort in Bastrop. That's really close to you...have you been?

Welcome
Welcome to the forum, William.
Our daughter lives in northwest Austin and planted her first SFG last fall. As a Missouri transplant she is learning how to garden in a completely different growing zone, and is already planning more boxes for this year.
Keep us posted on how your garden grows, and we'd love to see photos of your garden and how you integrate it into your permaculture design.

Anyone out there in the Hill Country?
Greetings, Gardeners, I am a Texas Hill Country gardener brand new to this web site and am looking for anyone out there who has converted a raised bed garden to the SFG method. Specifically is there any reason I can't just add 6 inches of Mel's Mix to my existing beds and go from there?

Re: Hello from Central Texas
Hi,
I have two raised beds that I am converting, finally. I put down 6 mil black plastic over the raised beds to keep down weeds, then I put my boxes, with bottoms, on top of the plastic. What you don't want to do is let your MM get mixed in with your raised bed soil as it will dilute the five way compost nutritional values.

Thanks for the reply.
How do you handle a heavy rain flooding your box on that plastic?

Re: Hello from Central Texas
My boxes sit on bricks at the corners to allow them to drain. My box bottoms are mostly hardware cloth covered with weed cloth or a few have plywood bottoms with drainage holes. I rarely get the heavy rains that you do, and flooding is something I didn't even think about.
