Just wanted to share. I went to Home Depot today to check out what they had for gardening, and their compressed 3 cubic foot peat moss was under $10. Compared to Lowes at just under $12. Home Depot also had these awesome patio self watering raised beds for just under $30. It looks like it could easily be a 2x2 or great for lettuce/herbs. I got two of them to try. They also have a 4x8 raised bed that is higher on one side and lower on the other and comes with a "Green House" that can fit over the higher part. It's $189, which I know is kinda pricy for some people but it's still a great little set up.

Also, if anyone lives near the Charlotte/Belmont/Mount Holly area in North Carolina, where I go to get my Vermiculite is only $14.99 a bag for the huge 4 cubic foot. I'll post the info later in the database, but they don't keep it in stock except for a few bags. So I paid for 6 and took the 4 they had, but they'll order however many you need. It seems to be coming a popular item 🐱

Also, most places around here have broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, and even some pepper and tomato plants now. Onions sets as well, and for most things it was under $2 for things. Some of them were even in the 6 packs for under $2.

Just wanted to share!

That is a complete steal for vermiculite, kimbertangleknot. Thanks so much for sharing! Unfortunately I think by the time I drove down there, the gasoline cost would offset the verm. price. Sigh! Hopefully someone else may benefit, though.

I'll keep an eye out for the info on your vermiculite source. I've got family in Charlotte who have square foot gardens they started last year. Not sure if any of them are expanding this year.

Sorry I haven't gotten around to adding it to the database yet, been so busy here, my computer died, then busy busy busy again. Here is a link to their Facebook Info Page that has their address and telephone. The link to the website didn't work when I checked about a month ago, but they're a small business, really mom and pop type.

I'd call them first because if they don't have it in stock (they only keep 4 bags at a time) they'll have to place it on the next order which can take a week or two. They're really nice and helpful though. Good peeps.

Off I run again!

I would also like to point out, that they have a large variety of seeds also that are in clear plastic bags because they're saved from peeps. They tend to sell out of stuff, and once they're gone, they're not back until next season, but they have some of the same varieties that seed catalogs sell and then a few they don't sell. I got my giant calico beans from there for pretty cheap. It was a half pound bag. Unfortunately, one entire seed flat of mine got some kind of mold on it and they are all dead, but I had 100% germination rate, so I'll be doing more!

They also have the peat moss, and black hen poop (but they are bit pricey) they also have TONS of canned jellies, jams, pickles, etc. their muskadine (sp) jelly is to die for.

Prices on some stuff for MM Empty Thanks!

Post  jazzymaddy 3/23/2011, 3:26 pm

I just wanted to thank you for posting this. I was able to get all the vermiculite I needed, and they had peat moss and 3 kinds of compost. Sweet! Thanks for the heads up!
