March 2nd, New England - Page 2 Empty What do you make a trellis frame out of again?

Post  NHGardener 3/16/2011, 4:38 pm

I got the netting from amazon, which looks great. My husband said - now we'll have to get some saplings... and I said, oh no, you use the steel. And he said - What? That's expensive. And it'll rust. Oh no, I said, and went to lowes.com to show him what I meant. But I can't even remember the name of the stuff. Electrical something or other, galvanized, I can't remember.

Old age, garden panic, current events, who knows why, but can someone remind me what that pipe is that you use to make the frame to hang the trellis netting on? Thank you. tongue

THAT'S IT!!!

Thank you!

Lowes.com has it 10' x 1/2" for $2.18. That's cheap enough.

I think Japan is just throwing me for a loop lately. Have to try to keep focused.

March 22, 2011. I couldn't take it any more; I shoveled the snow off my garden beds. The tulips are just starting to poke through the frosty ground. Yesterday I saw robins, today I saw a bluebird. Wink

Yah, I'll say! Smile

I got my four boxes made on Sunday tho! My husband was kind enough to show me how to use the power drill/screwdriver, and I went to work. And the next day, after crouching for an hour putting those things together, my legs were tremendously sore! Don't tell anyone tho. It's embarrassing. Smile

But now today I couldn't even get my car out of my driveway till mid-morning (the plow guy must have figured we'd be fine). And my rooster is sick. pale

No indoor seeds planted yet, will have to get to that this week. camprn, Blue Seal was actually out of vermiculite and lobster compost when I went! I'll have to try Agway, maybe tomorrow.

Here's to a speedy spring!

March 2nd, New England - Page 2 Empty The big thaw

Post  Healing Garden 3/26/2011, 4:47 pm

I finally was able to get out to my plot in the Fenway community garden to survey the winter damage.

March 2nd, New England - Page 2 P3200010

Not as bad as I thought it would be. My arbor lost its roof but I hadn't secured it for winter so not surprising. I was surprised to see two strawberry plants looking healthy. I had also over-wintered (i.e. forgot) my globe artichokes. Anyone know if they will resprout or should I just clean out the square?

Your garden looks pretty good! Yeah! No snow. As to the artichokes, I would be very surprised if they have survived this winter.

As for me, We still have snow, I awoke to another day of bone chilling cold, 17F @ 7 am. I can see the garden now, but the wee garlic sprouts are obviously protesting the protracted freezing weather. I am not satisfied with the current weather pattern, so I am holding off on the hoop covers and early sowing. I did get my new hive bodies today, Hooray!

This waiting for snow to melt in New England is getting old. I shoveled off one of my raised beds the other day. The snow was so icy I could walk on it barely making a mark. I also shoveled away the top layers of ice over the proposed asaparagus bed. I hope they don't mail those to me anytime soon. Ugh.
That's about the extent of my spring prep for my garden so far.

My real worry is the dwarf peach tree arriving around April 5th. The snow is much too deep in the orchard area but if the sunshine doesn't melt it enough tomorrow, I'll be out there on Monday shoveling a space for it so the soil can warm up a bit. My grson will dig the hole. With my bad back, I don't dig holes these days. He can dig in 15 minutes what would take me at least an hour. I'm grateful for his help.

I wish all of you in New England better weather, warmer days to melt and warm, and plenty of sunshine.

Count me in as being frustrated that this winter is never ending. It's just too cold to do anything out there. I got the soil components, but don't even feel like starting the indoor seedlings yet. Two more days, then at least it's supposed to be in the 40s. Once the warm weather comes, it will probably go full force. Until then, I'm just holding out indoors...

camprn, do you have bees? I'd like to start that, but have to take a local class first to see how, maybe next spring...

Just a quick whine about the weather forecast.

If the snow doesn't disappear by July, will that affect our gardening plans?

I can barely muster the strength to do my indoor seed planting. I was waiting for solar inspiration.

The new snow will be gone in a few days, no worries! The birds are singing their love songs, Spring is surely on the way. What we have here is a good Old Fashioned New England winter, just takin' it's time...
No need to wait on the indoor sowing... what are you planning to plant inside these days?

Thank you camprn, I needed that. Smile

On my indoor list here is broccoli, eggplant, peppers & tomatoes, which all need to be started by this weekend. I have all the equipment & soils, just need to mix it, make the blocks, plant, & set the tray on the heat mat. I figured with the heat mat, it buys me a little time.

How about you?

March 2nd, New England - Page 2 Empty there's hope for spring

Post  Healing Garden 3/31/2011, 9:19 am

Despite the Nor'easter planned for Friday I am sure that by the second week of April we will all be planting. I set up my cold frame and put all my broc, cauliflower, and cabbage seedlings in it. I also put the lettuce out there even though the true leaves aren't out yet. I had coleus and alyssum growing indoors as well and needed room for my peppers and tomatoes so it got tossed into the cold frame as well. It did go down to 29* for a sec but I think they all weathered the cold ok. The heat however is another story. It gets hot in those things. I've already recorded a high of 101*. That's not good. It was vented and everything. I can't believe what the heat does to the watering needs. The cold frame plants seem to require daily watering... indoor was once a week. Since the garden is in a community garden 10 min walk from my condo I will have to be very disciplined.

I hope my Boston thaw doesn't make you NH and ME folks more frustrated. Just letting you know that you will soon be out in the snowless ground.

I've got the winter doldrums. Every time I turn around there's more snow.
We're expecting more on Friday, more likely starting tonite. Brrrrr.

I got my lumber to make my cold frame but haven't made it yet. I haven't been able to put up my A-frame either. I just got the snow cleared off 6 of my raised beds by going out two days in a row to shovel them off. I can't shovel for long. Embarassed

Now I'm awaiting the latest snowstorm. I really need to get my broccoli and cabbage seedlings out in the cold frame. Even with the lumber, I still have to get the soil mixed and added but no one is selling compost, manure, or potting soils around here yet. My own compost is frozen in the tumbler and not quite ready. Home Depot just got a shipment of evergreen trees, and some forsythia bushes, so I guess that's good news. Surely the bagged stuff is coming in the next few days.

Yup, its been an old-fashioned winter around here. A late start to the season. We can only hope for better weather in the Northeast.

Good luck everyone and cross your fingers.

I'm hearing you quiltbea. I got what's left of the scraps of wood outside stacked and ready for the woodstove tomorrow (getting VERY low), I'm hitting Pizza Hut this afternoon for enough pizza to hold us over thru tomorrow, gotta get some soda too, and try to get as comfortable as possible to wait this out. Sounds like there will be roof raking in the picture with the wet heavy stuff.

One day at a time. We'll probably go straight to summer after this. Smile

I transplanted seedlings yesterday into plastic cells: 2 types tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, basil, broccoli. I have 2 types peppers finally sprouted after 3 weeks, and eggplants. Today I planted coleus, painted by new bee hive and went to a rally in Concord, NH. Tomorrow I am planning on starting some annual flowers Very Happy and shoveling snow. Sad
