My partner and I are trying SFG for the first time after finding Mel's orginal book at my aunt's house. It peaked out interest right away. We live in Providence RI and don't have a lot of space to work with. We are hoping to FINALLY have an amazing garden even though we live in the city. We just picked up the new SFG book, so we are up to date on all the info. Wish us luck we need it!

Oh Aunti J! You have got to find the new book, thumb through it and see if you want to plunk down the money. It is so much better, easier! I had a girlfriend who SFG with the old book, I though Ugg, too much work. Not with the new. Have a look, see what you think.

We picked up the new book last week and are so looking forward to getting it set up! My only problem is deciding what to plant and where Trying SFG for the first time! Icon_rolleyes 2 brothers live upstairs from us and will joining us in the planting so it should be a lot of fun. We are starting out big (at least in our heads at the moment) with 6 squares, one per person and an extra for pickling and sauce etc. We are getting our seeds from a local college who has a program every year to get people into growing. And tomorrow we are picking our our new "pets" a worm composting setup. We are all really psyched this year and can't wait to see how it comes out.

Trying SFG for the first time! Empty Welcome J and J

Post  quiltbea 3/22/2010, 10:31 am

You'll find Sq Ft Gardening fun but not labor intensive. I began last year and was amazed. I loved it.
Another thing is this: Through all of last July we had torrential rains. Many local gardeners lost most of their crops. Raised beds saved mine. I lost very little. My 12" high raised beds drained off that excess rain wonderfully well.
You'll also learn what works best for you and you might want to make changes that suit those preferences next year. The best thing about Mel's method is you can make it fit your needs.
You won't get a bonanza of crops, but you'll eat many meals fresh.
Good luck.
