SFG Progress
Just thought I would share my progress on my first SFG
This is Roxy (she thinks she is a big dog) guarding the Mel's Mix ingredients.
Here is the box after we mixed the ingredients and spread them in the box.
Next weekend the trellis goes up then we can start planting. I already have seedling ready to put in!

SFG Progress
Finally got two rows of my box planted this weekend!
Parsley, Cilantro, Red Cabbage, Swiss Chard, Spinach, Cauliflower, Lettuce (2 sq), Broccoli form seedling I started the first week of January. Carrots, Basil, Radishes, and Beets from seeds.
I really wanted to plant my tomatoes also but it is still to cold at night. So I will continue to put them out in the sunshine every morning and then bring then in out night before it gets to cold. Hopefully they can go in the ground at the end of the month.
Until then it appears that we will be getting a deluge of rain for the next few days so I have the husband putting up the hoop house this afternoon to protect my seeds and little baby plant.

Good job Florence, you are off to a good start. Things can only get better.
Oh by the way I think I saw roxy's bone in square 3. I am sure she will dig it up when it is ready to be harvested.

Re: SFG Progress
Looks fantastic! Love the hoop addition. Nice babies, too...they are looking great. Did you start them under lights, or on a windowsill?
Great garden
Your garden is looking great, Florence.
It may just have been the way the light was reflecting, but your tomatoes appeared a little pale to me. Are they getting enough nitrogen? I feed mine with a little weak fish emulsion once they are up and growing, until I transfer them to Mel's Mix.
Loved your dog, too.

I live in So Cal so we have really nice weather during the day (most days). I started them on my kitchen counter and I take them out every morning about 7am and bring them in at night around 7pm before it gets to cold. On the days that it feels to cold or rainy, I keep them in and leave the fluorescent lights on in the kitchen.

hmm.........Not sure they look okay to me but this is my first year starting from seed. I started them in Jiffy mix in those little peat pots and then moved them to the cups when the roots started coming thru. I will make a run the garden store this weekend to see about fish emulsion. What strength should I use and how often?

SFG Progress
I finally finished planting my first box! I also treated myself to one of the Lifetime SFG kits from Costco! New pictures below. My original box is 4x8 made with 2x8. The only problem I have is once I added the trellis, it is now hard to reach the center of row 3. SO for the new boxes I opt for 2 4x4 boxes. Right now they are half full with Mel's Mix I purchased already made at Lowes. The other half we be homemade mix since I have the ingredients already. When I want to grow deeper veggies I will just add a top hat.
First box all planted and trellis put up:
Close up - left side
Close up - right side
New box - half filled with Mel's mix. My back thanks Lowes for premixed Mel's mix.
The whole thing!

Re: SFG Progress
Good for you! Those are nice looking boxes.
I can see how the inner rows could be hard to reach. Maybe next winter's project will be to cut the 4x8 in half?!

Florence
Everything has done so well. Your plants are looking great!
Those boxes look great too. I can see that with the trellis down one eight foot side, it does limit your access to the ends and the south side, so it is understandable that the inner squares are a little difficult to reach. I am glad you got 4X4 for the newer boxes.

Boxes look awesome and such progress, you are doing well. I too have 4x8 boxes for some things I love it, but for others I want different. Learning is so much fun when we get such a return from our work. I cant wait to see the progress as you go.

tabletopper,
I woke up to that same pouring rain and howling wind. I
only have a hoop house over my first 4x8 bed but unfortunately I did
not put it on that might. Luckily the only damage was a topple broccoli
plant. I went out and gently lifted it back up and tied it to a nice
sturdy stake. Finger crossed that it will be okay.
As for teaching SFG in school, I am not familiar with this program. This is my
first year trying SFG after many failed attempt at other types of
gardening.
Good luck with your garden.
