How are you improving your SFG this year?

I'm finally going to fork over the money for a pitchfork. (pun intended). I've been waiting to buy one at a yardsale for a couple years. no luck.

also, soaker hoses

going to build some 2 sq ft boxes, to put on top of existing boxes for carrots and to do the potato tower thing.

Will finish the worm tubes I bought the pipe for last year and use about 6.

We bought a larger house this past fall, so I get to start from scratch. Last year, we grew lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, and beans. This year, I plan to grow the same and add peas, radishes, peppers, spinach, broccoli, and cucumbers. I need to build a trellis and a hoop house that I didn't get the chance to build last season. Lots to do!

We're going to add one 4x4, one modified 4x8 (one end will be double height), two 2x16 beds, one for tomatoes and one for peas, and two little narrow boxes with a cattle panel arch between them (thank you for the inspiration, chocolatepop!). I'm hoping to try out floating row cover and plan to try to keep the bugs off my squash without resorting to harsh chemicals. My big dream for fall is a hoophouse, but we'll have to see if we can scrape the money together.

I'm adding two more 3x3 beds, an arch of some sort between two of them for my pole beans, some sort of watering system that requires me to hook it up and turn it on and turn it off (I have a hard time with heat and humidity, very much bad). I'm planning on adding two boxes around my two trees in the front yard to grow a butterfly flower box and also an herb box. I finally cut back all my roses in the front yard, to go with container plants. Now... I just have to buy the containers and figure out what will work best in partial sun (any suggestions, can be edible or inedible).

Still sticking to my maters, beans, and peppers just adding a lot more of them. I might try a watermelon vine, but that will be in the ground, and I still have 3 rolling containers from last year that I need to do something with. Maybe I'll turn those into my spring/potato crop ones since they're 16x16... *back to planning I go!*

*Is still jealous of everyone that has more than 2 beds*

What are you adding this Spring? Empty Re: What are you adding this Spring?

Oh... what a fun thread. (and, You go Kimber!)

For hardscape there is already that pup-tent looking cold frame. Now I just need time and weather to get out and fill it. I'm told that one or two more will be simple ($$). I'm going to see if I can use them like most of you would use a hoop house. I want to be able to rotate crops so I need to be able to move the covers.

Two more 2'x8'x10" beds are scheduled for the back garden. I too am hoping for a chocolatepop style arch between them.

On the side yard the bonus plan ($$) is for two off set triangle gardens for cutting flowers and bulbs. Are they just raised beds if they are long triangles instead of squares?

SFG Plants that will be new to me: I am finally going to try Fava Beans. Two things convinced me to try. 1. My neighbor grew them and they are pretty. 2. TSC describes them as good in falafels. The topper was that they can go in as early as peas. I think I'm in the mood for beans. I am trying cranberry and another bean that is grown for the seed instead of the pod.

Went a little crazy with the tomatoes, which really is nuts after last year in the PNW.

Deborah....Thinking that if the bulbs are ready to take a chance then I better get out there.

What are you adding this Spring? Empty new additions

Post  ander217 1/20/2011, 10:11 am

We are adding one more 1' x 8' box next to the west fence, and adding eight more feet of trellis on the north side.

I'm adding some type of new herb bed - debating pros and cons of putting them in a SFG box. I think I'll start a new thread about that. I'm also adding a permanent dill bed in one corner. Not sure yet if it will be SFG or in regular soil.

On my wish list is a 3' wide archway leading to the garden gate with two new 1' x 3' boxes on each side, but not sure if that will happen.

Also on my wish list is a table top box, but that's only to the "thinking about" stage. (Not sure where to put it yet.)
