Anyone else here from SE Tennessee? I'd really like to see some SFG's up close & personal since this will be my first SFG. I'm located just outside Chattanooga on 10 acres WAY out in the boonies. I've gardened traditionally a really long time but I'm getting too old for all that tilling & weeding, so DH is building my boxes up close to the house so it'll be easier to take care of.

My main interests are heirloom tomatoes, sweet & hot peppers, cukes, beans, melons, lettuce & squash. I also have blueberries, raspberries, blackberries & asparagus. I'm excited to be here & anxious to learn all I can.

Dixie:

Welcome to the Square Foot Gardening forum. Do you have the book, "ALL NEW Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew? If not it well worth getting a copy for yourself. There are many improvements in the new book over the old method. Easier, better, and less weeds, watering and "amending the soil". In fact there is no amending the soil at all as the new system does not use any, just vermiculite, peat moss and compost. If you have any questions please ask. We love to help.

BTW what are you planning on planting the most of? Are you planning on planting anything new to you? How about Drunken Woman Frizzy Headed or maybe Bloody Butcher? Love to hear your answers.

God Bless, Ward.

Beans: McCaslin pole (in main garden) Roma bush, asparagus yard long both green & red,
Cucumber - several types
melon: sugar baby, maybe cantalope

Probably several others, but I can't remember.

I'll probably do the majority of tomatoes in my old/main garden since I grow so many for canning. Same with the cucumbers.

Any special advice on SFG with any of the above?

Boy, I wish I was out in the boonies... unfortunately, for some odd reason, folks keep coming to my hometown wanting to visit some overgrown mouse.. Razz

What kind of sweet and hot peppers do you like? I love banana peppers, as well as the various varieties of habeneros, jalapenos, and a few others. (Any canning recipies for the peppers? Hi, Y'all Icon_biggrin )

I'd love to grow asparagus, but I'm not sure I could wait the requisite time... I tend to be a tad bit impatient. Very Happy

Hi, Y'all Empty Asparagus and SFG

Post  WardinWake 3/19/2010, 5:36 am

Dixie:

Asparagus can work well in a Square Foot Garden. Asparagus needs to be in a box by itself as it will, in time, take over the box. Asparagus roots run DEEP, up (down) to 12 feet so the box will need to be bottomless, i.e. the box will need to be on the ground with a disintegrating weed blocker such as newspaper or cardboard. Mary and I planted our asparagus last spring and hope to have at least a small crop this year. Our mistake was in putting the box out of sight of the rest of the garden so it does not get the attention that the rest of the garden gets.

What size box do you think you will need to feed the family and have some to give away?

God Bless, Ward.

Right now my asparagus bed is 20' long, but only a single row. This will be third year, so should get a decent crop. Trouble is, we all love asparagus & my mom will get a couple of messes from me, but that's all I'm gonna share. I plan on a bed against a retaining wall - do you think 3' is too wide since I can only access from one side?

I Googled images for SFG's & have found a lot of ideas, especially for trellising.
