I was poking around on Craigslist just now, and look what I found! A very nice looking cold frame that you can order for about $45. I doubt they deliver, but they are located in Springfield. I visited their main website and wow, what a place! Shocked

That is nice!

I saw one in "UrbanFarm" Magazine that looks easy. It is made of PVC pipe with a 1x4" base that my Ray plans to custom fit to my 2x8' beds. It should work in the 4x4’s if I remove the grids. My oldest has the stuff to make custom fit lantern cloches for the grids out of PVC and that storm window stuff that you shrink to fit with a hairdryer. I'm jazzed!

Wow! What a cool idea for a company. We had a bunch of windows someone had given us that we moved from our last house, hoping to turn them into something at some point, but sadly they were mysteriously broken and now we have a big mess of broken glass Sad I don't know if it was the neighborhood kids or my own kids, but I was really sad. Not too long ago someone gave me two glass shower doors that I hope to turn into cold frames at some point.

Oh, that is so sad, miinva. Sad I am definitely going to look into this company further. I am pretty excited--I found another Craigslist ad for some free lumber, so maybe I can build a few boxes after all!

Check your local glass shops. They have take-outs all the time when they install new sliding glass patio doors. They are tempered for family safety. My local glass shop sells them for $10.

I was typing a reply & suddenly lost the screen, so I'm going to repost.

Your post on cold frames reminded me that Habitat for Humanity has what they call ReStores which sell donated materials they don't need and I understand it's CHEAP.

You might be able to pick up windows and lumber cheap to build your own.

Just Google "Habitat for Humanity ____________" and put your State name in the blank.

Kim

Do you ever wonder what happens to all the old window frames in remodles or when a family decides to pay big bucks to go green? That is where I used to collect "junk" windows. (I can take that off your hands and put it to good use if you like.... )

This one is called ReBuild Warehouse and appears to operate under very similar principles to Habitat for Humanity, except they don't build houses, just supply materials. They do offer windows and lumber. I am definitely going to check into them for lumber for my SFGs (if something else I'm looking at doesn't work), but I think $45 is a decent price to pay for materials and construction of something I'd be grumbling at to try to put together myself. Smile Someone else's mileage might vary, of course.

Yes, definitely Megan. And this looks like a very good "cause". Just offering an alternative.

Inexpensive, pre-built cold frames Empty ReStore

Post  SQFTBIX 1/17/2011, 12:55 pm

I am very familiar with this group. They have a store in Baltimore city on Kane Street. My wife and I go there occasionally. The last time, we bought two half doors for our bathroom downstairs and all the hardware for about $50.00. I have found all sorts of stuff there but for some reason, I never thought of a cold frame when looking at their extensive window supplies. Go figure! This is a very fascinating store and the prices are impossible to beat. My neighbor is a contractor and he found 7 lenghts of very expensive railings - thanks to my wifes tip - that he used on our neighbors house. He said it was easily 1/4 the cost there as opposed to HD and Lowes. He was very happy and hadn't ever been in there before. I would recommend them for house improvement items and now - garden items. LOL!

Neat, SQFTBIX! Glad to hear from someone who is personally familiar with them. I am still itching to get over to Springfield and see what they have, and not just for gardening!
